Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

I sure hope you can erase that vocal/choir/voice preset cuz it sounds like @$$.

I was more put off by the "keyboard" co-opting the user to using diatonic collections. Like those Fisher-Price My First Xylophone toys that only have five keys, tuned to a pentatonic scale. Talk about ruining kids' imaginations early...

the "aaaayyyayayayayyyaaaaaa" stuff was hot garbage, like Delay Lama with the charm removed.

Ha! Bonus points for remembering that plug-in!

Drummer is thinking he can take on some of the samples and mayhem we have been overdubbing in the studio. Ive worked out the basic four drum pad+sample player aspect, but it would be ideal if there were some multifx unit that could be added to the little side boards.

Some of the constraints would be that it needs to be small. There just isn't space ergonomically to put too much there. The other is that, it would need a easy way to tweak like, without a full hand. Some of the parts in question, he will need to knob tweak and switch to drumming quickly.

I find myself wishing they still made more Kaoss pads. The little one is in consideration. But Im wondering what other ideas you might have.

Well. I’ve definitely started moving farther away from live rock music. I went to a show tonight with a “conventional” band playing and I almost couldn’t understand what was going on. The players were all great, but I kept wondering when they were going to get weird. The bassist never stepped on a reverb pedal. The keyboardist didn’t have layers of pads and samples. There was no modular gear in sight. I couldn’t figure it out at all :bag:

i have that sort of thing, but it has less to do with gear than it does with approach. i want something with distinct personality.

I started experimenting with the Qu Bit Bloom sequencing the Erica Sample Drum. It gets kinda interesting. The Bloom has two channels and the Erica has two channels. If you plug a kick sample in on channel and a snare in the other you can do some basic beats using the Bloom's gate signals, and then mutate them. You can also plug a kick and snare on one channel and CV modulate which sample gets played with the Bloom's pitch for that channel, then load a hat on the second channel. The more samples you load the more you can modulate with the pitch CV controls. You can only get two active gates/samples at a time, but there's plenty of noise to be made with that.

I looked at the post above yours, then at your response and before I looked at who wrote it I thought:

"That sounds like something Ugly_bassplayer would say." :roflmao:

How's it going gang?

I'm still here from time-to-time, lurking. Hope y'all are healthy and happy.

Cheers,

Hey all.
I posted a rather lengthy cry for help in the Effects forum here.
If you have sec, can you weigh in?
Thanks!

i’m blanking on the name right now, but i saw a guy do a set with at least two eh freeze pedals (iirc) and was able to latch on to different chords and drones while he played a bunch of other wack stuff.

he was from (i think) the nashville area and played a multi-string bass (more than six for sure). he definitely had to dance around to do it, but it was pretty impressive.

maybe something along those lines?

if i remember his name, i’ll post it.

@JES

this came up on a make noise fb page today and i thought of you. (you might be able to self patch vector as well?)

I’ve never heard anyone discuss this before so here it goes - self patching the Rene is so much fun! Main sequence on X channel, CV out to Y-CV in, with Y set to Add you can do clean transpositions! (Or S&H with different clocks, that works too!).

Mult the X-CV out to one voice and Y-CV (which is X-CV + Y sequence) to another voice and two interrelated sequences perfectly complementing each other! Play around with the clocks and the Gate outs and it’s gets even more fun!

Yup, one of my favourite uses of Rene is the mixing of differing sequences. Generative music without the use of random. Make the relationship between all elements complex enough and you will end up with something never repeating but still deterministic.

Here's an experiment using these exact ideas.
