Managed some drones with the Grone today during a couple of meetings - here's the most fully realized one:



Set the LFO to random (fully clockwise) - may have messed with the rate a little bit, filter resonance as far as I could go without self-oscillating (the filter, not me) - may post one or two more, the first one I start with the drone by itself, then bring in Clouds. Finally getting the hang of this thing?!

Hot take from my day job: they will fix it to eliminate this kind of thing. I once visited Google headquarters and there was a real time screen with all the searches happening at that moment: except somehow nobody was searching for drugs, porn, anything violent, illegal or even weird. No “how do I know if have cancer?” Etc. it was saccharine to the extreme.

So what happens when they fix the chat bots so they don’t excrete psychotic prose?

They will fill up the internet with absolute garbage. Think of your spam folder, but on every website you visit.

I’m sure some artist will do something cool with it and it will be helpful to some people in some use cases, but just look at the wasteland Google search itself has become as the need to make money off ad revenue overtakes everything else. See also: corporate social media.

In other news: do any of the modular nerds have a Vermona Melodicer? It looks like a fast and fun way to spice up arpeggios and repeating phrases, which. I like a lot. Also no “specify a key and scale” stuff. You just choose the notes you want to include.

If you’re doing another approach to generative melody and rhythm, how are you doing it? I don’t love the generative approach on my Vector Sequencer (feels less “playable”) but of course it’s great for other things.

The control stuff all seems very smart, and I like that you can't just plug a MIDI keyboard into it. The shape is kind of ugly like a random ink splat -- I think I'd prefer something kind of streamlined and guitar-ish. It seems like the bottom could have been made non-flat so you don't have to sit it on random junk on a table to wobble it. It probably feels great to play though.

I thought I was going to get to defend the sound once I heard it, but... the best I can do is, the little bit of "ooooo" vowel range that he mostly avoided playing might be all right if played judiciously. But the "aaaayyyayayayayyyaaaaaa" stuff was hot garbage, like Delay Lama with the charm removed.

It's a lot of stuff, some of it quite heavy, and if I just toss it all in some milk crates it'll never get unf***ed when I get it home. I am thinking of ways to simplify it and make it easier to set up, take down, and transport but for now this is what I got.

Funny thing is when I started this electroic stuff I never planned to do shows or drag it outside my house. It was just a side hobby thing. Now I no longer have a band and this is what I do live. Weird.

I’ve seen some creative approaches to this locally. Most of them going with keyboard cases and simple wooden boards the length of the case velcrod as you would a pedal board. The biggest, the guy had taken two heavy duty wheeled racks and loaded it with all shelves. The gear was then all on like oven trays, cookie sheets, velcrod on. Despite that huge amount of stuff, I gathered they were in a deliberate order because he
-took them out, plugged into the next, power plug, repeat. Until the last had audio outs.

Yeah I've been looking at other people's rigs and kicking around ideas along similar lines. The main issue is when I'm at home everything has to go down a set of stairs, down a walk and into the bed of my truck, and then the reverse has to happen at like 2 AM. Putting stuff on wheels is great but you still have to lift it and haul it up stairs. But I'll figure something out.

Oxi One has some nice sequencers, I think

re "playable": interesting in that i like turning vector parts off and on to give shifting pattern (which i consider "playing").

i haven't tried it, but i know there are a fair amount of people who use a launch pad to do stuff. maybe that would be useful?
