i’m too stupid to wait until i know everything, so i’ll just blunder on ahead and make some sounds i like and use.

(my usual mo. not sure i really understand anything like a lot of you kore techie folk here.)

What’s the local opinion about in-bass electronics? I tend to prefer passive, but I also like weirdo passive stuff like varitones and am very curious about passive diode distortion like the black ice.

I’ve decided to get a new body for my #1 bass, as now that I’m playing with a pick exclusively, the binding cuts into my arm. I’m doing a single P bass pickup (my old fav G& L MFD). Currently deciding whether to have 2 or 3 holes drilled for pots. A 3rd hole would allow for more weirdness. I’ll keep the old body loaded in case I ever switch to a new drug and can play finger style again. I doubt it’s worth much to anyone else anyway.

In other news, I am really enjoying playing piano. I think lessons are on the horizon for me, though I feel bad about neglecting my touch guitar teacher.

@JES i think I’m familiar with and comfortable with passive basses. My F Bass often ends up in passive, as much as I’ve wanted to run the preamp. Though I do like my Spector 5 with active & EMG. I’ll experiment with recording soon and I’m sure I’ll find a use for a straight to interface active/preamp sound.

Get three holes and use the 3rd as a “dummy” pot with no function.
If you decide to add whatever, the bass is ready to mod ASAP.

I’m a boring all passive J or P bassplayer.

Thanks all. Okay, 3 holes it will be. I think you all will hate the finish I chose. Very excited. :)

@monsterthompson — EMGs get a lot of hate around TB but when I’ve had them, they have always recorded very very well.

I’m also 100% passive now. Mainly because I got sick of leaving stuff plugged in and draining the battery.

Today I hosted a band meeting for the post rock band (we are recording in May, very excited because I am not recording or mixing) and then a friend from out of town. Both are synth interested and I got to demo my whole setup. It was super fun. Lots of questions about the Implexus, the Perfourmer, and the Cosmos.

Or you could just keep them in the closet and never plug them in, but bask in the warm glow of knowing you could plug them in if you wanted to.
…not that I’ve done that.

This morning's jam. I ran the Implexus clock into the gate input to do a Easelish thing where I generate rhythms and then play notes independently with the Linnstrument. Really dig the deep bass I'm getting at the tail end, too. What I need to do now is run a couple clock dividers through a logic module and then into the gate for more interesting rhythms.

Of course, at some point then you start worrying about all those unused undrained 9V batteries leaking due to lack of use...and so then you think "Ah-ha, I know, I'll remove the batteries from those basses!" ...which works great until you have a gig and forget that you pulled all the batteries ~6 months ago.

Ask me how I know :poop:

I spent some time in my DAW recording a few different bass parts and layering them. It was weird hearing the effects of having a clean bass line in a low octave, then adding a distorted octave up line in parallel, then using another distortion pedal sound playing a 5th above or below that higher octave. I could start to get fun detune chorus effect and timing differences. I don’t know why I’ve never done that before. I’ve thought of it but never recorded it.

Or the pull the battery for its annual changeover and accidentally rip of the connector too ;)
