Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Just a quick note to say I got the Hologram Chroma Console the other day and really like it. I’ve been adding a baritone guitar, pedals and some looping into my electronic gigs, but intend to get a bass vi at some point. It’s fun and folks seem to enjoy seeing me do more than push buttons and turn knobs

@Starthief, is there a blog post or something you wrote where you lay out what you do in the DAW vs what you do in hardware? I'm experimenting with smaller setups for my year*-in-a-smaller-apartment-away-from-home and trying to figure things out.

Hmm, chances are I probably said something in a forum post somewhere on one of the 3-4 places I post. But in a nutshell:

Synth voices: some of each, and rare hybrids ((Euro oscillator with the DAW handling filter/VCA duty, or software drone/loop processed in Eurorack)

Effects: a ton of them in the DAW regardless of the voice source. Eurorack/Strega effects mostly for hardware, rarely do I route software voices through them. Dreadbox Hypnosis is always routed via the DAW regardless of what it's processing because I'm lazy about repatching it. Couple of other hardware effects toys are routed ad-hoc usually through the modular.

Sequencing: For any voices that aren't just drones or manually played, *usually* hardware sequences hardware and software sequences software. More recently I've done a bit more MIDI-CV conversion for hardware voices (using Seqund or Bitwig Grid patches), and sometimes I'll do hybrid modular sequencing stuff. I don't have the MIDI plugged in on my Minibrute at all.

Controllers: 0-Ctrl, Planar and Gliss are almost always for hardware. Minibrute's pads are almost always for itself (if I'm not using 0-Ctrl instead). Sweet Sixteen is mostly for software via MIDI CC (mix levels mainly) but also sometimes analog CV or attenuation. Roli Seaboard and Line6 FBV Express are mostly for software, but sometimes get translated to CV.

Mixing: Mainly the DAW (aside from oscillator blending / feedback loops etc.)

Recording: 100% the DAW.

Editing: 100% the DAW, though *rarely* I'll run an entire mix through a hardware effect for some reason or other.

Mastering: 100% the DAW.

Thank you! So I gather that hybrid is a rarity for you. Mostly control is paired in its own domain, so things mostly “stay in their domains” until they are (mostly) mixed and recorded to software and processed with mostly software effects?

Did you try and abandon other approaches before settling on this one? I’m pretty sure I’m going to have to be hydrid for my sojourn so I’m starting to experiment with different options. I already use software (mostly) for effects and (entirely) for mixing so I’m on my way there.

I think it's a particular sound that's not for everyone.
One thing I can say for sure is that the spoked wheel adjustable trusrod should be mandatory on every bass made.
Often adjusted my stingray 4 neck on my Frankenstein bass with a nail or any piece of metal on stretches of gigs when the trailer of gear was outside in harsh winter cold.
My mini tool pouch got stolen, gigs in $h1t holes ftw

Yeah, this should be a standard thing on basses.

I’ll never forget playing Al’s Bar in Downtown LA. I had no idea about the history and we were there on a pretty mellow night, but I could still tell the place had seen some wild times. I’d say it was probably akin to a CBGB or Max’s Kansas City in its prime, though maybe not quite as important as the Chinatown venues like Madame Wong’s and Hong Kong Cafe. That scene was a few years before my time so I’m estimating based on what I’ve heard over the years.

That show was kinda interesting for a few reasons. It might’ve been the first time I saw a live looping artist. He had a guitar looking “collection of parts” where the neck was at 90 degrees to the body and the strings made a big right triangle. He plucked and banged and clanged on it while running into a Boss delay/looper and he managed to layer up some wild compositions on the spot.

I’ll take drunks over K heads anytime.
Had one gig last year with about 20 people lost in K holes.
The debaucherie was something to behold

One of my last “club” outings was a massive event that had an outdoor area with vendors. It was all pretty much goth/cyber/kink stuff except for a table full of people in jeans and t shirts handing out info on testing for fentanyl and what to do when your friends go unconscious and you suspect fentanyl.

I must be outa the loop or the places you play must be in actual cities. I wouldn't even recognize if someone was in a K hole. I suspect you also play in different scenes Tha I usually do. Down here, it's usually jazzheads or hippies who just wanna dance.

Hybrid is definitely a rarity on the synthesis side. I used VCAs in Bitwig Grid with Euro VCOs a couple times just to escape latency issues. Once in a while I'll feed stuff from the DAW to Rings or Beads.

On the control side I'm willing to do MIDI-to-CV sometimes, via Univer Inter. Or I'll send clocks or (less commonly) CV from Bitwig Grid, synced with other things going on in the software, like sample loop playback. But I don't have a decent CV-to-MIDI solution. (I could route CV through Sweet Sixteen to convert it to MIDI CC, then use Grid to convert that to notes, but I've just never done it. I suppose once calibrated it should be relatively stable next time I load that same Grid preset... hmm. Could be fun to sequence Aalto via 0-Ctrl I guess.)

I’ve pretty much done the rounds.
From jazz heads, hippies ,K heads, cocaine cockroaches ,punks, metal gals, drunks, gear nerds, hipsters, booking agencies, Hells Angels……and then some.
Even grocery store openings!!!!
