Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

This is where I'm at also.. I've been following the thread for a while now.. I have great basses, to me, great cab, starting my effects collection.. and working on the recording gear..
It's gonna be a fun trip, I believe
BTW I really like your avatar with the Eden double stack. I have a couple of Eden cabs I'm quite fond of. I think Eden is underated nowadays... :)

What a great thread, sub’d. I just found this thread last week and have listened to pretty much every clip that has been posted. What great, inspiring work!! I mess around with this type of stuff on my ipad (Auria Pro, tons of apps) to and from work but haven’t thought of bringing my bass into the mix, until now of course. I know there are tons of recs on the thread and it gets kind of overwhelming. My question is what are the first few pedals you would recommend to get started with this? I currently have TC SubnUp, One Control Crimson Preamp and EQD Afterneath on the way (just love the sound of it), 62 reissue jazz going direct. The list in my head is endless but my funds are not, can anyone rec 1 or 2 pedals you consider essential? Trying to keep it under $200 per, if possible.

Somekind of delay is always nice. But a small, cheap and great multi would be a zoom ms-70cdr.

I would recommend looking st the Line 6 HX effects. $600 for a whole bunch of great sounding effects plus a looper. Check it out, you might like it.

I agree with most everyone on a good delay and looper...the multieffects suggestion could very well be a great call, but I’ve never tried any since the Pod stuff years ago. At the time, they did all kinds of stuff, but didn’t do any one thing especially great. I’m sure that’s changed a lot!

I really like the EHX Superego+ for getting cool drones going. Something pitch based is nice too. I have a Digitech Bass Whammy that’s working well for a reasonable investment. Dumb name for a pedal, but it’s been really useful :)

How do you like Auria Pro? I’ve been considering a DAW for my iPad, but can’t decide. I have BeatMaker3, which I may spend more time with. Lots of folks love it, but I haven’t enjoyed it much so far. Maybe I’ll figure it out eventually!
My favorite iPad apps so far are;

Patterning (Olympia Noise Co.)
Samplr
Tardigrain

Cool, thank you. I will check that one out too. I have a feeling my wife is going to love this new rabbit hole I'm going down lol!

Mine was somewhat perplexed at first...when I’m first trying to come up with a song idea, it’s just a bunch of bleeps and bloops. Gotta drive her crazy, but she’s been a really good sport about it :)

I absolutely love Auria, mainly because there was no learning curve at all for me. I used to work on Neve and SSL desks many years ago and Auria has a similar layout, so it was very intuitive. It really depends on what you are accustomed to with all of the great options out there.

I have Patterning too, but it seems daunting and I really haven't explored it too much yet. I will have to dig in a bit. The apps I have been using a lot with Auria lately are:
Chord Poly Pad
Audiobus
Model 15
Model D
Animoog
Filtatron
Step Poly Arp

Thanks for the recs and I will add them to my ever-expanding list. Hope to have some stuff to post soon too.

here’s my 2¢ on the pedal thing

really dig into them. spend a lot of time knob-twiddling and really listening to the effect and to what the controls do. use your imagination as to how you can use it (i tend to believe that there is no such thing as a useless sound).

also: the line6 helix efx is pretty cool. i don’t have one, but checked out a friend’s. my one complaint is that they spend a lot of time and energy modeling fuzz/od pedals and don’t give you enough to really sculpt your own (from what i could tell, only one fuzz/od modeler had a clean/effect blend and full eq). i would think about it for my purposes but for that.

I have the Model 15 as well. So many of these synth apps sound insanely great for so little money, it’s tempting. Sadly, I’ve been determined to write all these pieces using bass only. It’s been a fun experiment though.
Thanks for the tip on Auria. May have to grab that one soon!

Re: Patterning. I get that some apps seem more intuitive for certain folks and others for other folks. I have some apps I’ve just never bothered to learn because I find one thing or another off putting about em, while other people find them extremely intuitive. I will say Patterning is one of the easiest apps I’ve ever used. It just looks odd at first glance. Once you ‘get’ the basic interface, it’s super powerful

Ya but lots of reverbs and delays for ambient stuff.

I would add an interface, I really like my SonicPort, and experiment with apps.

I made a little board and have a patch bay that interfaces with my ipad mini4 and with JamUp and BIAS and the like I scratch my "traditional" pedal itch and with AudioBus and standalones I can continue with many, many options for relatively little outlay.
