Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

plumbers make *way* more money.
Indeed. My buddies dad when I was a kid was the "go to" guy in the company.

He would get all the tough jobs no other employees would get done right fast enough.
That meant quadruple emergency paid calls!!!!!!!!

He was called simply Mr Bossé. ( his family name......never by his first name.....even by his boss)

@dukeorock - Is that a fretless on Lounge Ax? What bass?
Let’s see...it’s a 1971 Gibson EB3L. It’s fretted, but kinda sounds fretless. I played live into my Octatrack and used LFO’s to modulate filter and pitch. The Scenes slider on the Octatrack is a thing of beauty for manipulating stuff in real time.

Thanks for listening to the record!

It had some Fretless qualities but wasn’t quite there. Close enough I had to ask. I churned through it a few times today while working. A few things caught my ear.

Izotope hooked me up with a bunch of software, so I installed some plugins I’ve been wanting to try. This tune is no big deal, but I did it using all Izotope plugs

BreakTweaker (the first drum bit you hear)
StutterEdit
Iris2 (soft synth)
Used two of their fx as well.
Trash2 (seriously good distortion)
Mobius Filter

Couldn't use my Slate channel strip stuff because I couldn’t access em. I like their stuff, but I constantly get locked out of the Cloud and gotta wait for support to sort it. Thinking of getting a UAD Satellite and canceling my Slate subscription. Just such a pain

Might have to try out Trash 2, I have yet yo find any VST dirt that I actually like. I usually end up with saturators or some kind of Slate combo in a rack to make things happen.
Open to suggestions.

Not really a distortion\fuzz but I really like the Tritik Krush Bitcrusher.

Intersting read. Only sharing as to spark a friendly conversation on a beat to death topic. Bitrate and sample rate, a constant (insert infinity symbol) debate.

All in good fun, nothing intended as an absolute “truth” in my end. IMO, use what makes you happy and smile while you work is the most important thing.

Keep creating y’all!!!! Still more work done here than on 95% of TB.
Proud of you, and really dig sharing experiences and debating.
:)

High bitrate audio is overkill: CD quality is still great

This reminds me of an eye opening op ed piece I read in TapeOp like a million years ago when I fancied myself as a hobbyist recording engineer...it was all about the criticality of the performance above ALL else and how some of the best records ever made were the worst fidelity but the performance made the fidelity work...and how so much perfectly produced stuff is just polished turds. How poor fidelity can even add to the mojo of a great performance. I always try to keep this in mind when I get all crazy about gear.

kinda like that old saying...

if you are a great musician, the gear you use doesn’t matter...and if you are a sucky musician, the gear you use doesn’t matter.

Reminds me of when one of the top players in Quebec came to our school for a master class. His name is Michel Donato....look him up....incredible player, extremely musical and awesome mustache. :)

He didn't bring his upright bass a played a piece of crap school bass that sounded like a baked patato.
He made that thing sound LIKE GOLD!!!!
Huge lesson learned that day.
To the woodshed we go!!!!!!

I love bitcrushers in a general sort of way :)
So far, I think Trash2 is fantastic. Really covers more ground than most dirtmakers

the main benefit of higher sample/bit rates as I understand it, is headroom. Not a topic I would argue passionately about :)

@dukeorock
You should make an edit of Try Harder of your record.
1;38 is way too short.

Dope a$$ record!!!

Thanks! Funny, I do have a longer version of try harder, which is just solo bass through eurorack stuff. I made it shorter because I thought folks would get bored too quick with it :)

Returning the Moog Subharmonicon this week, pretty sure. It’s great for cinematic kinda stuff and I like the sequencer, the the sound palette is super limited and I have a really hard time getting it to sit in a mix. Seriously considering exchanging it for a Hydrasynth desktop, if only to shut @steubig up :)
Also considering adding a few bucks to this a getting a Sequential Pro3.
Funny thing about the Hydra is most of the demos don’t do a thing for me...like, I don’t like em at all. But stuebig’s demo and one or two others lead me to believe it’s got a ton of potential.
The MegaFM is still on the list, but thinking a more versatile Poly would be more needed right now
