Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Given that I haven't gigged or even seen my bandmates since February it's hard to imagine buying another instrument at this point. I often think a Bass VI-type for ambient/electronic stuff, so maybe. But I haven't bought a bass since 2011, when I bought two (A Squier Jaguar, followed by a Ric that was on sale and couldn't be ignored). My last new bass at that point was from 1985 (Westone Spectrum I grew up with). I still have all three. I'm not the flipper type.

Love the discussion of bass acquisition. I had settled on a #1 which is still my #1 bass (a mutt—G&L split coil and soap bar, local body, USA custom guitars neck, weird passive electronics). I have too many others. But because of the hand pain, I started playing touchstyle in September. Bought a used NS Stick as a learning instrument (with the intent of selling it down the road) and am awaiting delivery of a Touch Guitars T8 which is basically my Fodera or Carl Thompson acquisition.

Sup guys, I have found myself in the interesting position of having to choose my "favorite child", grabbing my little Roland Cube 20xl and a lil jansport backpack with my 5-7 favorite effects.

Ended up walking out the door with my active 5 string fretless (P/J Sire), my Zoom B3/MS-70CDR, Boss DD-20, TC Electronics Hall of Fame, Two Notes Torpedo Cab Sim, Aguilar Tonehammer, and I think I grabbed my little Looper pedal.

I'm looking to start a project while I wait for some Jaco tablature books to arrive. You guys been listening to/playing anything fun lately?

Edit - might be shopping around for a little piano synthesizer. Any recommendations?

My number one bass came about from many years and many basses. 6 strings. 2" nut width borrowed from Modulus. 16.5" spacing from much trial. 33" scale and chambered for a warmer sound. My second custom bass, and third in total, from my good friend Brian Ristola is a bass that bass players play and envy. It didn't start that way. It was originally brighter and stiff. After some pickup and preamp experimentation, and some years of being played a LOT, it has become something truly special and irreplaceable.

About two months ago I received, after four years and a failed prototype, my Martin Keith semi hollow 6 string bass, and it is quickly becoming my new/co number one. It will get most of my time no doubt, but the Ristola is more on the electric side, so it will absolutely have it's place. Both absolute gems. I've never felt such ease and such joy from playing the bass guitar as I do with these two.

Also, Steuart along the way convinced me to go passive, and then that voice made me reconsider my having put a preamp back in...now my basses are all passive. That has been a big part of getting a sound that I love as well.

bad influence

for what you wanted probably the right thing. if you wanna be wooten or miller, probably not the right thing. of course, you can always an outboard pre if you really need one.

For pop gigs I sometimes use my Aguilar Tone Hammer DI/preamp. Does a great job. For any creative music I go passive. The double win is passive works much better with pedals as well.

I took the preamp out of my zon years ago and never thought to put one in my 4 stringers

Pedals are sooooo much better with passive. My dirt pedals became deadly when I made the switch. Honestly everything just opened up and blossomed.
