Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

+1 Multiple loopers is the schiznit.
I must have described how my loopers are wired up elsewhere in this thread, no? I'm going to see if I can describe this in as few words as possible, so as not to put anyone to sleep:

An Electro-Harmonix 16 Second Digital Delay (reissue) -- which sits downstream from half a dozen other pedals (not including what I can feed it from the VFE Klein Bottle) -- feeds an Electro-Harmonix 16 Second Digital Delay (vintage circa 1980 unit). Which feeds a tc electronic Ditto. So three serial loopers
...except there's also a flip-flop switch in between that allows me to move the Ditto in front of the Electro-Harmonix chain.
So yeah, tons of fun passing loops back and forth, up and downstream, mangling them using the various tools (modulation, reverse, half/double speed) that the two E-H loopers offer.
Wait, did I mention there's another flip-flop switch that allows be to move a POG2 and tc Flashback Mini either before or after the two E-H loopers?
Oh, and ^^^that entire signal path is in one of the channels of a VFE Klein Bottle. In another channel there's a Montreal Assembly Count To 5 (downstream of a couple synth pedals), and in the last channel is a Chase Bliss MOOD feeding a(nother) tc electronic Flashback which spends most of its time in Looper mode. So I can pass a loop from (almost) any gizmo to any other gizmo at any time, all the while incorporating additional signal processing (either from within various loopers or via other stompboxes) and additional live material from the bass.

Yeah, it's messed up :)

Speaking of loopers...have any of you guys ever used any of the Looperlative products?
I've been jonesing for one of their LP1s ever since I sold off (regrettably) my Oberheim Echoplex Digital Pro a decade ago. But I've never met anyone who's actually used one of their products.

i have not. i saw one at namm ages ago (10 years?) and knew a couple of guys who were involved with helping on the designing it. i mentioned that i thought it needed a master volume knob. one of the helpers said they never used one and didn’t understand why i would need one.

hmmm, next.

that being said, i think some guys swear by it. steve lawson is one, i think (or used to be?).

what’s the little cab that looks like a mini audiokinesis something?

It's a 6/1 cab with a horn loaded 6. Same waveguide for the tweeter that Duke originlally used in the TC cabs, which is a JBL design, but with a much more robust compression driver. That cab has a huge heavy duty 3-way crossover built into it, so I plug the amp into the top box, and then another cable from it to the 115, which has a 600 watt BMS driver in it. Works well as a mini-PA too.

Yep, I saw Steve playing in their booth a couple of times.

Steve is still using one. I asked him a couple days ago.

The Elements arrived and I know why @steubig has 3. So many great sounds. It does high gain very well and low gain very well. Also, expression control over mix is. the. shiznit.

Edit--but when we get back to band stuff, I may have to switch the Blower Box out for this. So many good sounds.

Impressive. It's basically a pedalboard modular synth.

maybe try it with the blower box? have is set up with the exp pedal and then pull it in and out for either boostnof feedback/overtone mayhem.

That's one option. Another is pairing with the super oscillo fuzz. More news as it happens.

That's from Last Gasp, isn't it? I had an earlier one, I think it was this one, sold it around 2006 when I moved back from Japan and haven't thought of it since! It was a cool effect though - the Super looks nuts! I used it on the drone guitar paired with the MF-101 lo-pass filter Moogerfooger on this remix (that I think I've posted here before, one of my rare noise tracks):

nice. I bought mine in Australia. My wife and I walk into a guitar store in Sydney. She goes over to the pedal case and says “what’s this”? I say, “I don’t really need another fuzz.” She says “just try this one.” She was right. It’s been my secret sauce for recording for years. I’ve got the 88. Of course now you can get them everywhere.

i’ve known guys who were serial daters when it came to basses, they went through in four more basses than i own.

i guess i’m a polygamist. stay married to many. ;)

I largely agree w you can do an unlimited amount of things w a limited set of tools, but for basses, I went through a zillion...I even worked in a shop that imported handmade basses from Europe and went to Musik messe’s and ran booths at name...played em ALL up until early 2000s when I laid hands on my first Carl Thompson. Ended bass GAS forever w the exception of wanting a few CTs. So, there is some merit in trying them all...as long as you can recognize when you’ve found the one.

totally.

i was lucky that i found a then little-known company named fodera in 1985. since then 95% of my bass lust has been for their stuff (and then a very small part of their range).

Heh I went through a few basses but not that many compared to a lot of you guys...
Had a Yamaha rbx375... but hated it’s baseball bat neck. Then had a stingray copy but never quite got along with... played an Ibanez k5 and fell in love and it’s been pretty much my main bass ever since, except for my little fretless obsession which ended up with a squire fretless jazz that I sold to my bass teacher so I could get the Ibanez gwb35. After not using fretless for ages I sold that and now just have the k5. Despite the way fieldy sets it up, it has really strong low mids and a fast slim neck and is just perfecto for me :)

RE: Bass ( think we did this a few months ago..??

Basically had 3 main bass in the last 20 years.
1st is a 2000 G&L JB2 jazz bass (moded with custom 60s fender pups)
2nd is a 2005..(i think..) Fender Pbass (GZR pup)
3rd is a Frankenstein that plays awesome. Late 90s Musicman Stingray neck, Warmoth jazz bass body stained green. Routed fo PJ but I only use the P (another GZR)

4th one I own is a Yamaha 70 lawsuit Pbass, Fralin pup, 15 year old flats.

Pretty much play Precision style instruments now 99.99% of the time. Jazz style Pups now sound weird and “scooped” to me now but when it fits for something its perfect.

For about 15 years my G&L was my main (and only one for a while), was always in my gig bag for university. I could go from the jazz fusion combo playing tribal tech to the bebop combo and gig top 40 in the same day. Very versatile instrument. Only pedal was a tuner in the gig bag side pocket.

Yep.....I’m that boring on that end.
(Many others came a left, most notable a Valenti custom PJ 5 string. Never bonded with it. ended up trading it for my Fender P plus a good amount of $$.)

5 strings : 57645456453547
Me: 0
I can play them, but never felt good on one. I suck......

Might want to get a good fretless in the near futur. But, no rush since everything is ridiculously $$$ due to the inflation .

My 2 cents

I was a one-bass guy for a long time... when one has a Wal, generally, one is pretty satisfied. Had a Warmoth fretless I made but didn't like, eventually got the Stambaugh fretless 5, so I guess I've been a 2 bass guy for the last 20 years or so. It was only in the last few years a few more came into the mix. Got the sixer when I started getting serious about the pedalboard and didn't want to keep switching back and forth with guitar. Then got the Stingray because the Wal is just too damn heavy. Unfortunately, the Stingray's not much lighter, but it's still a lot of fun to play. Lastly, got the MIM Fender Jazz, so I had a cheap bass to knock around with...actually took a bass camping for the first time, last week.

I don't see myself getting any more, at this point. But that's what we all say, right?
