Hoo boy. I lost 8 hours today to a redo of the big board. Lots of programming and reprogramming to get everything to work, though I am pleased at how flexible and easy to understand the RJM PBC6X is, and after my bumpy start several weeks back, the Ventris editor is behaving well too and I have made a nice menu of presets that go from subtle to insane. Also my fingernails hurt from peeling the backing off 3M dual lock(but now that it’s on I do like it better). It would be done except I’m having power issues. I hadn’t really touched the board between 2015 and 2020, and I’m hoping this will be good for another 5 years.

This is the board that lives in the practice space and is for playing with others.

I love gear acquisition but gear management...dunno about that part.

The home setup will be a table with me plugging and unplugging stuff as the mood strikes.

This video was helpful for me making sure I don't have needless duplicates, and really tightens down what suits my needs and sounds i am after.

I went through my spreadsheet list of gear that I keep for estimating my insurance coverage (in case of theft or fire). I added a column for who gets what if I get hit by a bus tomorrow. I need to memorialize it in a will. Just going through the exercise piece by piece made me realize how many things I have, both in-use and on the shelf.

Edit - it’s not a crazy amount of stuff for someone who has been playing for 30 years.

Apart from my reverb quest, and the home amp I bought this year to replace my dead Eden, my best purchases from the last couple years are all problem solvers or utilities: a K&M musicians stool, a timer for my reps in practice, regular touch guitar lessons, and in the home recording dept, a proper weighted mic stand and a broadcast arm for my desk for all the Zoom meetings. All of them are more life changing than any signal processing. Next up, an XLR to 1/8” cable.

Very wise. And a big favour to your family. I did this with my wife. The gear isn’t in a will but in an auxiliary document. The will just mentions the document. Ditto on her end for her drums and a few other things. Plus that way we can change gear without redoing our wills.

Jeez, I tell my wife if I die, she can go out and buy a nice new car if she sold all of my gear. Last estimate had it around 25k. It's a crazy amount of stuff.

When I kick the bucket, burn me into a fine powder and throw me in the river.
My gear ain’t worth that much so, give it to anyone who can use it.
I dont own anything of high monetary value except my house (almost 50% paid for) , so......
I’ve never been a materialistic person. Quite the opposite in fact, I feel guilty having too much stuff.

Everything will go to kids and wife.

We already have life insurance for us if anything happens.

Still pumping out some stuff. Still working on it.
Got lots of crap recorded. Gonna filter through it to decide what can fit together on my next release.
Might keep in short, under 20 mins maybe....???
I’m actually very scared and intimidated for this next one since I previously mentioned I scream my brains out on a couple tracks. Very brutal\raw\unpolished, seems everything I do comes out dark and brutal.
Main recording and production tool lately is my good ole SP and portable 4 track.
Got a « good » workflow down with those 2 things IMO......
Only mastering is done on computer as of late.

I don't think of myself as materialistic. I generally don't live extravagantly, my bills get paid and I don't have any kids, so I figure spending a lot on gear is my only outlet for conspicuous consumption. I have reached a point with instruments, though, I don't really need any others.

I will, someday, write down what all my stuff is worth for my wife's sake. The only express desire is I want my Wal to go to one of my students who's far exceeded my talents and capabilities, and is now working as a pro in NOLA.

Wasn’t at all implying you where a materialistic.
Absolutely nothing wrong with having gear an nice stuff. If you can afford it and put it to good us, all the better.
Lost in translation of written msgs I guess.

Guess I just go t used to getting the most out of what I do have rather than relying on buying stuff to solve problems or creative ruts.

For example recording full live drums to sample with my portable 4 track and two 57 mics. Is it perfect...no....does it work....yes it does.

My 2 cents.
