RE: price of samplers

I'm sure there's a market for mid price hardware samplers. Not many choices for that price bracket.

What are a kids choices these days????
1200$ sampler or 400$ computer with daw?
Not every kid has parents with deep pockets.

I know what I would chose if I was a kid getting into sample based music.

i’d think ipad. like the computer, it does a number of things like email, so there’s more bang for your buck. it’s more more portable and robust than a computer. there are some pretty decent daw programs. if you like logic, i’m pretty sure that garageband ports over. beatmaker (i have bm2) is pretty cool. can do it all on headphones.

Edit - As soon as I posted this I was thinking about all the wacky gifts attempts my dad made when I was a kid. They usually weren’t the cool toys I wanted. However, I came to realize the stories about the gifts were in some ways better than simply getting what I wanted.

It’s not just kids. Professional electronic musicians tend to stick to laptops and pretty basic and cheap controllers. Sure there’s Alessandro Cortini but he is an outlier. I’m a MUTEK regular and it’s pretty fascinating. Lots of basic Korg and Akai controllers and laptops.

I performed with an iPad once. Exactly once. Never again. But it’s great for messing around at home. And reading. Like actual reading. And Talkbass!

i’ve done a ton of recording projects where i played ipad synths and samplers in them. drum programming too.

and i found them much easier for live improv than a laptop. (done a bunch of live gigs and a few records with them.)

I’d record with it happily. But I sweat when I perform and a wet touchscreen turns out not to be very reliable in the heat of it.

Now that I wear glove to play, touchscreens aren’t very useful if I’m switching between synth and a stringed instrument. Also why I need a metronome outside my phone. But if it’s just ipad, that’s another story.

Tonight, my relationship with my Hydrasynth blossomed even further as I discovered both the Random function as well as the mod matrix section. There is much to unlock here, but learning of it's existence and exploring it's capabilities has been game changing.

This being my first synth, I largely went on faith that this new company that I'd been hearing some solid buzz about would be a good enough tool for me to get my feet wet w synthesis in a real way...but I had no idea. This thing is a monster. It's so far beyond what I had in my head for what this beast would be like and even what a synth was capable of. Every now and again you stumble into a great purchase, but this tops all others for me so far. Just wow!

i found a laptop was less conducive to working in the moment: point-click-load. ugh.

honestly I just prefer stuff with knobs. The not working with sweat is sort of the iPads fault, but not the gloves.

most touch surfaces are capacitive, not just the ipad, right? so that would be a problem for just about any of them.

i went to the hydrasynth cause i needed keys. thinking about another playing surface (sensel or linnstrument) for use with the desktop for live stuff due to size and some other considerations.

still, the issue was about an option for kids, not crusty old farts like us (well, me).

Exactly, was thinking along the lines of an entry level hardware sampler that can be affordable for the next generation of kids wanting to go try the classic art of sampling.
Roll back 10 years and a lot of old MPC where more than half the prices they are now.
Guess who drove the prices up.......yep...old farts!!!!....and probably some hipsters
Plenty of bass and guitars in that price bracket, why not a sampler?

Then old farts like us complain that kids have it easy these days with all that auto chop and crate digging on the inter web thingy.

Cortini\Merzbow album is surprisingly very good.
Not for everyone for sure, but lot’s of ideas and cool tones on that album.

Yes, absolutely, including the touchpad on laptops. I'm basically screwed if I'm not using "hardware" though with my post-rock back I've got a Linnstrument hooked up to a laptop (Linnstrument is not capacitive), with a MIDI Fighter Twister for controlling levels effects.

There are all these cool new devices that are coming out and then I see they have touchscreens and I'm like "well, not for me." Which is what I should be saying to all non-utility gear at this point.

Yeah. Cortini is a regular favourite in our household, and back when we could have friends over, my wife would put something of his on and guests would be all like "whhhaaaaattttsss tttthhhaaaaatttt?" It happened over and over. I think he might owe her a small commission.
