Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

How have y’all approached this?

A once- or twice-yearly wipe-down with Endust For Electronics, and then a weekly or monthly going over with a fine paint brush or featherduster (not an actual featherduster, but the modern synthetic yarn equivalent). Mixing console has a dropcloth over it except when in use.

...and yet my stuff is still pretty dusty!

I have a woodstove, and damn, it's a struggle to keep all of those knobby things dust free.

an anecdote i find funny.

right after graduating from music school i got a job as a day laborer on a construction site (good use of a degree!). it was an earthquake renovation crew run by the wall of voodoo road manager; two of the guys from wov were on it as were a ton of artists and musicians.

i'm schelping drywall, bags of concrete, etc.

one of the buildings was the oldest theater in l.a. that was now a low-budget porno theater—mostly homeless guys trying to stay warm.

anyway, we're working in the attic and there are a lot of holes in the ceiling, so you could look down at the screen.

(finally—the tie-in!) the glimpses of the onscreen action were all accompanied by the soundtrack of non-stop jackhammers.

(okay, maybe not funny for you.)

I had a project a few years back where I got the idea to layer in audio from adult films. It was buried and layered in effects, so the source audio wasn’t really recognizable. In a rehearsal, my collaborator, completely out of the blue, said “wouldn’t it be funny if you layered in some porno sounds?” I flipped a few switches to get the dry audio and said “you mean like these?”

I’m sure this has been done to death. It’s a lot like the Fight Club bit about Tyler splicing movie clips. And, who hasn’t heard about Disney animated movies with questionable drawings? Still funny, though.
