Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

I had my over-ear headphones on, and I was whistling into my mic listening to the incredible effects I was getting...
Then I took off the headphones and there was a big sounding dog going crazy barking outside my partially open window. The guy walking the dog was clearly having trouble managing it. I’m sure I must’ve been driving it crazy :)

So they arrived. Triode Pedals Leviathan filter and Astrolabe drone synth. Basically Grayson of Triode hand-builds them, so I ordered the two of them and it took him about two weeks to build them. He's not far away from me over in Maryland so I was considering just driving over to pick them up but wound up getting them mailed instead. Solid build, these things are like steel bricks and feel really well made and sturdy. I just have to be careful with that tube sticking out of the Astrolabe. Maybe I can find a hard case for it somewhere...

I already recorded something with the Astrolabe so I hope to have that up soon. The Leviathan I'm just getting to.

Hey, folks...

Few things...

Iridium - okay, this is getting ridiculous, I'm having so much fun with SD, I'm not upstairs playing. I'm planting my ass on the couch and making sounds 3 or 4 hours a night. I've made more patches on this thing in a month than I've done the entire 4 years I've been doing the synth thing, and they're not basic generic patches, either. I made this super complex sequence the other day that I got so hypnotized by I musta sat there for 20 minutes and just listened... on those new "Phil Jones Bass" headphones I got that sound pretty awesome. I think I'm gonna try and make a video of some of my patches.

Wanna buy Rick Wakeman's synths? He's got a lot of 'em.

Lastly, in anticipation of that Miezo travel bass, I've been trying to think of how to get the octave lower without having to drag around a pedal. He has an octave thing built in you can get, but he recommends a pedal, which makes me think it's not that good. So my first idea is to take an octaver that is small and tracks well - the TC Sub n' Up mini, and then take the guts out, rewire the stomp to a switch and hopefully figure out how to wire the pots in, then install it in the cavity of the bass, if there's room. Problem is, I'm not exactly confident in my abilities to do so.

I threw that out there to TB and someone suggested, why not just use an iRig and one of the effects apps, so I got out my iRig duo pro, downloaded the Bias FX app, and much to my surprise, it's gonna do the trick. The octaver in it sounds decent and tracks pretty good, unless I'm trying to get notes below low D, then it sounds a bit weird. Plus it has a bunch of other stuff, and I ended up spending half the night making a bunch of patches... clean, dirt, clean with verb, a few strange things, my 'jazz solo' tone (rotary/verb, kinda like that Charlie Hunter sound), and a low octave one. Not only can I just jam out with headphones and full effects, I can also use this setup for an on-the-go live thing, say, if I show up to a jam. I have the buffer set to 64 (lowest), latency's not noticable, it's not choking, either. The effects sound decent enough, and I also have a few other reverbs for the super ambient stuff that seem to work really well. The Bias app also has a workable looper, so yay, more fun.

Also, for your listening pleasure, the video for the jam session for the first synthfest I did back in January is back up. It actually sounds a lot better than I remember, I think the noisefest at the end that I complained about wasn't nearly as long as I thought it was, it was probably just colored by my perceptions of how people started heading for the exits at that point, as well as my well-documented aversion to noise. The whole thing actually sounds a bit more cohesive than I remembered, no small feat, given the relative inexperience of almost everyone there.




I'm the schlub with the curly hair and the Moog, kind of in the middle.

It's about a 45 minute jam, so something good for the background. I didn't put the effects on it, I wish they hadn't put them on it, as it makes it hard to see what people are actually doing.

My experiences have been that I want one but have never dove in deep enough to determine which version would scratch the itch.

I have a WMD Protostar and that thing is legit as far as filters go so I would expect top noise from geiger. Those guys are mostly modular guys so they are less about traditional music making effects which is always appealing to me. I would think the geiger was made for you.

Kinda of tool that's gonna pull me further down the noise pit of Dante's inferno.

the vid efx are kind of annoying if you want to see what's up.

seems pretty good to me (i'm about 35 minutes in). i always appreciate when people stop playing a bit to give things a chance to breathe.

First test drive of the Astrolab. It came in the mail just as I was leaving to go visit my mom over the weekend, so I took it with me along with my portable synth kit (Recorder, headphones, and the battery-powered pedal and Volca synth of choice). Had to dig up a 12V center-neg power supply too. Anyway, during the downtime Sunday I recorded this in 3 or 4 layers. Astrolab for the droney stuff at the beginning and end, and also the synth pad sound during the sequenced parts, which are from the Volca Bass.
