Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Lots of content here. I certainly don’t expect anyone to sit through all of it, but here it is in the entirety. There were some good sections and some lulls. I’ll try to mark/comment on spots I like.

Some audio drops and clicks as we tried to get SonoBus settings sorted. There’s a Dingwall, Medusa, and Zoia patches all over it. My friend was using an old EMS Synthi for sections.

Really liking the section around 51:00.
The wobbly, watery lo-fi sound on the bass is the Mister Shake patch I built on Zoia. It gets prominent on the loop that plays over the next 5 minutes or so in the background.

Anyone here know if this kind of looper exists.....

For example, 1st loop is 5 secs long.
If I overdub, usually on a looper, the max time of the overdub is the original 5 sec loop.

Is it possible to start with a 5 secs loop, then add say a 30 secs overdub.
The 5 secs one keeps on looping its 5secs and the 30 secs one loops for a whole 30 secs. And so on for every overdub, the loop is not set at the length of the first "take".

Am I making any sense??

i doubt it.

you could do something like that with a looper that allows multiple asynchronous loops of different duration at the same time. the boomerang 3 does it.

The Pigtronix Infinity (not sure if this is on the V2) has two loop sections and you can set them to run at independent rates/lengths in one mode.

I believe the Empress Reverb and Echo V30 Looper functions will let you do that with 5 loops. I need to double check on mine, but I think you could do asynchronous loops. The instruction page isn't super clear.

It might be cheaper to buy a couple of Ditto loopers ;)

Sorry. Only bling-y suggestions here :bag:

This is what I do w 2 loopers and a flip flop. Loop 5 secs in looper A, then play along w looper A > looper B and record. When you hit play on Looper B, hit stop on Looper A, now you will have a 30 sec loop with both parts.

Did you check out the Aeros? You get six loops, and three parts (meaning, two more parts of 6 loops).

New tc ditto + seems to have the feature I'm looking for.
They call it dynamic mode. (Whatever that means.)

TC Electronic | Product | DITTO+ LOOPER

Release date mid December.

Nice!
It seems they will “force” the new longer loop to be a time-multiple of the original short loop. That’s got pros and cons. If you’re looking to do an “evolving” piece where the loops drift apart, you might not be able to do that.

Ill have to search for a good demo. (Fun , fun.....not.....)

Edit....just hope ricky T won't pop up with a jack hammer acid beat mid loop

:roflmao:

Ok, two reviews in. This is a no go.
Glitched up software. « Dynamic mode » is crap, it uses the 2nd take as a guide.....not the first.....so its useless.
Many reports of this mode glitching up and having « sync » problems with this mode.

Computer connectivity issues, many users have recorded loop files that have no audio once imported (MAJOR FAIL if you just recorded ideas for a new tune not to forget it)

TC is total crap QC. This confirms I will never ever buy anything from them ever again.,
(One of my buddies had a Ditto X2 , 2 of them blew up on him in 4 days. Back to the store for a full refund. My Ditto only glitched once, and it was during a live gig....yay......)

TC, for me at least, now banned from my home.......except the old ditto I have already.

I guess the simplest way to go is the Boss RC-1, stereo and has a guide wheel to show you where the loop is at time wise. its limitations will force my creativity.....I hope.

My 2 cents, YMMV, IME, IMO.....etc.....

re tc: behringer bought them in 2015, which may have effected their qc.

re pigtronix infinity: i saw some commentary on a looping page that it has some major issues as well. people got rids of theirs.

before i got the boomerang 3, i was using multiple loopers (dl-4s). usually i’d do the bed track as the last looper and the stuff to be layered on the looper(s) before that.

the benefit of a multitack looper is that you can overdub one or do other operations and mot “damage” the other ones.

a friend has one of the older ehx multiloopers (forget the model) and uses it to good effect.

dunno how the boss things do, but i think they lack reverse, which is crucial for me.

Ya, reverse is awesome.
Never tried any of the ehx loopers.

The Oberheim/Gibson Echoplex Digital Pro has* a similar feature, in that after the first layer is recorded subsequent overdubs can be added in multiples of that first layer.
So you would record your 5 second loop, then tell it to essentially combine iterations while you added the overdub layer until you got to your 30 second length. Of course, then your total loop length was always 30 seconds for any subsequent overdubs or manipulations, you couldn't "divide" it back down to the 5 second cell. Still, was a cool feature.

*Had. I think those have been disco'd for years.

they are discontinued. i think they were under three different manufacturers?

anywho, probably not cheap at this point.

i think david torn uses two(?). there’s a guy in l.a. named andre lafosse who is a real master at using it.

So, I think I'm gonna take my modular dive with this beast. I'm going to see if Perfect Circuit pops a holiday sale coupon up.

^^^ The stuff around 5:10 got my attention. Honestly, it all sounds pretty good.

What I like:
- MIDI/CV input module. I can sync, sequence, and play with my Medusa and laptop midi.
- The joystick and crossfade.
- The Black VCO sounds good, and the wavetable does too.
- Plenty of modulation.
- The output module with a stereo send and phones out.

What I'd prefer or like to add:
- Clock MIDI out for sending to external gear. I don't know how I'd fit that in, and I think I can use my 0-Coast to bridge that gap.
- A sequencer, but not sure where it would fit and what it would replace.
- The Stereo Delay sounds pretty good, but I'd really like to get the next level up DSP module.
- A module like the one Intellijel makes for bringing instrument/line level signals up to modular level, so I could route my bass (or other instruments) in. I can probably use my Transmutron to get there.
