Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

This thread is crazy... not as quick moving and crazy as the Broughton one but I think getting there...

And yep, all the jazz and stuff I can’t relate to I skip over but this thread is still probably the most interesting “ongoing” one on talkbass for me!

On a random side note I got asked to join a band that was a mix of hardcore / metal / ambient influences... thought ok I’ll ask the wife and try and make it to a jam... until they told me they had 5 shows already booked and a small tour amongst a few hours drive all in February that I can’t commit to being a family man and all... ah wells... more opportunities later (fwiw we are not at pre covid but can have small crowds with limited tickets available... and more often than not it’s sit down shows... weird for rock/metal/etc but I guess it’s better than having the music scene die!)

What's it like in Australia? I was under the impression you folks had all but squashed covid and concerts without masks was a regular thing again in Australia? Not the case? Was it for a little bit? Perhaps I was seeing some old content that I assumed was new?

Trust me...much better than having your music scene die....it's a disaster here.

Ohhhh yes it does.
I’ve already said it million times, Dee Dee Ramone is basically the reason I picked up a bass.
The Ramones inspired sooooo many kids to just pick up an instrument and start a band in a garage its mind blowing. Bad Brains also with Daryl Jennifer.
IMO , two of the most important bands ever. They started a freakin movement, that my friend, is quite the achievement.

drones, noise, grooves, etc.

faux 808 programming in ableton; hydrasynth keys (the more tonal stuff); hydrasynth desktop with linnstrument (all the quartertone stuff); double bass; ebass with effects and implements/preparations.

Can’t speak for all of Australia as each state is being handled differently but yes, sometimes no masks mandatory and not too bad, still limited numbers and social distancing of sorts etc... but lots of stuff got cancelled / postponed last year and it can change pretty quickly. If a big hotspot gets announced all the other states are quick to point fingers and so travel bans and all sorts so “tours” and the like seem out of the question as do big concerts or guest headliners the local scene is ok... but then it’s always kind of been “ok” and never a big thing.

listening now. There is a sort of Bill Lasswell vibe. Love the double bass and electronics.

i recall that some of you all use the ebs flat pedal cables.

regular or gold? is anyone willing to take a picture of a the regular plugged in so i can the size of the cable jack the pedal in/output?

huh. delaminating around the head? how long have you used them? do you change pedals out a lot?

To be fair I have had them maybe four or more years...probably more, I don't use effects all of the time...but I also don't use a pedalboard where they stay in one place. Pedals get used and shifted around in different ways all the time.

My pedalboard remains mostly static except that I want a few new things...
I got the gold cos they were allegedly thinner - can’t really comment on longevity but beats the size of heaps of other soldered cables, hate that my pancake style have massive heads even though slimmer..

Are the solder points accessible?
If not, that’s a big problem IMO.

They are not. The entire cable is enclosed permanently. They are still the best ones that's I've tried, but I have been surprised to suddenly have three die on me the past months.

If you could access the solders, you could have maybe fixed them instead of throwing them in the garbage.

This is my oldest cable. Must be over 25 years old. I've used the thing in snow, beer, minus 40 gigs in the van. Had it everyday in my back pack for years.
ZERO issues ever. Not ever a crackle.
Maybe because the solder is so well protected??? Combined with luck??

Its a no name cable that ended up innmy gig bag when I was a teen.
I just compared it to the 150$ evidence audio cable I'm selling. I hear zero difference between them recorded.
Also consider I may have old geezer ears now.

that might be luck. maybe that no name cable is actually a really good one.

i’ve had situations where i wondered why the volume was so much lower the frequency range was so horrible and it turned out it was the cable (literally; the jacks were the same on the two cables i compared).
