Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Campfire singalong, all together now: a 1 a 2 a hmm mhmm —

"Awl Swiss Army saying is, give toothpick a chance..."

@JES what's your dream Belton BrickVerb?

PS: Thanks for that link. I knew what the BB was already, but I did NOT know Brian Neunaber was the punter who came up with it! I just thought it was a minion of Accutronics slaving in the back dungeon.

Very interesting Mr Neunaber doesn't use the BB in his own line of 'Verbs.

I recall someone mentioning unity volume between fx on and off was an issue.
Can't remember who???
Sound awesome though and that feedback switch is dope.
Had a mantic hulk but sold a few years ago since I wasn't playing gigs with sufficient PA support anymore.

Edit: I also believe this is a BB reverb to those in the know.
I did have one! Amazing sound, but unfortunately drops volume unless you crank the reverb up. Not useful for smaller reverb sounds....but if you want bigger reverb with self oscillation then it's amazing!

Seems like another expensive glitch machine.
Maybe you get that impression because he sameples\rec\overdubs very short loops and slices??

Again, I know just about nothing about this machine, just my impression from what I heard in the demo. I think the Echoplex dudes know way more about this than me,.

Edit: completely off topic, any of you guys know any drum step sequencers that dont quantize? Where I can input the drum hits by hand?
And no Ableton doesn’t count!!!

Yeah, that's what's giving me that impression, and it's something that personally, I find very limited appeal.

I think it’s capable of much more, maybe the demos are focused on that aspect?
(I’m completely neutral here, just my opinion on the product.)

I thought you where fully content with your looper (I forget the one you use)

I’d definitely hide my lack of chop skills behind some glitched out noise and call it art.
;)

funnily enough, i had a different reaction to it and thought the vid showed the opposite of what you thought.

i think most “glitch machines” have limited control, so i understand your hesitation on this.

to me, this is *all about* being able to control things on a pretty refined level.

it’ll be interesting to see if they do more long-form loops. fwiw, the looping groups i know of are pretty excited about this as a looper.

they’ve given a pedal to that guy andre for, i assume, a video of some sort.

we’ll see.

@ugly_bassplayer

the mc-707 (and i think 101) allow you to play things in that are unquantized, and then quantize bit by bit if you want (at least that’s the i impression i get). one of the things that interested me about the 707 not literally drum machines.

it might be interesting to see if the tr-6/8s will do that as well.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Will definitely look em up.

I've gotten so a custom to chop breaks and make drum beats unquantized that the "stiffness" feals weird to me now....personally . I like the slop :)

But I still aweful at making beats, guess why I never share them. Started way to late, its the kind of art that you need to get on young....and early 30s was a bit too late for me.

My 2 cents

might be worth checking out the roland online video manuals. a brief glance tells me that the 101 might do it, but not the tr-6s. both have some really interesting features.

Yeah, while I found it engaging and inspiring, it too left me wanting to hear how the Loupé handles longer loops...and especially, it made me realize that without knowing what the original seed material was, everything it's doing is a bit out-of-context.

A couple years ago I saw a demo video for one of the Chase Bliss loopers, I forget whether it was MOOD or Blooper, where the demonstrator took an almost remedial approach: "Here's a very simple easily-identifiable chunk of audio (dry) being fed into the looper...now I've sampled it. Now I've [insert litany of manipulations/modifications] ...etc. etc." It made it ridiculously easy to understand what the pedal was doing, what it was capable of, and how it was processing the audio. I found that incredibly handy; would like to see something more along those lines for this Loupé.

Full disclosure: I only listened to the first ~5-10 minutes of that demo video, perhaps it got more analytical and less glitchy later in the demo?
