Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

the initial setup tuned to E is higher than normal tension. i did drop that down a bit by tuning to C.

i see where you are heading with the tension idea, and agree it could be contributing. the bulk of the issue comes from the left hip and low back area. there's something about the seated posture holding a bass that aggravates my muscles. part of the issue is weakness in my left shoulder and arm, making it hard to get into a good playing position. i twist my torso and over compensate with my abdominal muscles, which is another problem.

i think the real answer is - i need some PT, including some gym time and massage work.

i appreciate the support and encouragement from the crew here :)
Also maybe check out ergothérapie, they are awesome with this type of thing.
They'll evaluate your position, posture, suggest alternative work positions etc.

I've tried both. It depends on where on the neck I want to play. Right leg balance gets me to lower notes, and left for higher. Each has pros and cons.

I've actually found playing it centered in the lap is pretty comfortable, but with the curves where they are it is a challenge to keep it steady there for long.

Any Ipad drum machine suggestions??
One that can preferably have a good « song » building mode and can import samples.

Edit, could also be hardware drum machine…..maybe…..

tbh, i don't really know what's current these days. i was listening to that gibson stuff i did and looked at the tracks. i have three ipad drum machines on some of those. dm 1, molten (do they make that any more) and electribe.

i did some fun stuff with something called easy beats and the impc (both on my phone right now).

i'm away from my ipads right now. there are some cool ones i got, but that were too robust for my scrawny ipad2. i'll see if i can't remember some of them.

most of these are not sample-based, but that wasn't my thing. or song building, for that matter.

they're sorta daw-ish, but nano studio was coo,l as was beatmaker2 (might have sample stuff you want). probably better for song-building?

dunno about the roland tr or mc series in terms of sample import.

Any cool drum machine suggestions are welcome.
Software or hardware. It's up to me to adapt.

I said i wasn't going to program drums anymore but I just got burned one time too many earlier today.

(People are soooooooo lazy)

I still think Patterning2 on the iPad is really good and you can import your own samples.
Elektron Model:Samples is a great sample based drum machine that can be had cheap. You can’t sample directly into it, but it easy to import samples from the computer. They go for a good price, especially used. The new Erica LXR-02 (I think it’s called) is really cool for functions, but not sample based.

but I’m another step closer to thinking I need to quit bass for health reasons.
I had to do that 18 years ago (caused by a bike accident) ! .......i know what it can mean.
i still should NOT play ! but started again early this year.

With back issues, would i keep the computer time as short as possible.
and i´d begin to work out with medicinal balls.
( i have back issues myself, .....and yes, i use medicinal Balls,.....but not as much as i should)
wish you the best !

The model samples is looking like a top contender right now. (For hardware)
I know that you really dig this one, thanks for the reminder.

Well, I just love Elektron sequencers in a general sort of way. I just have the Octatrack and Model:Cycles at the moment. Had and loved the Digitakt a lot, but the Octatrack reigns supreme for me as far as samplers go. Model:Cycles is FM based, but is also a great drum machine. I’ve heard folks do some ridiculously cool sounding stuff on the Model:Samples. If I didn’t have the Octatrack I would’ve likely bought a Model:Samples by now

@ugly_bassplayer

electribe is cool cause you can mangle away.

and patterning is cool.
Patterning made me dizzy.

Ya, my problem is between the chair and the computer\app\hardware in regards to programming drums.
its that simple.

I've got a Digitakt (thank you, @lordradish), and it's amazing, but also really deep in ways that are both good and overwhelming. If you're looking for a sample-based drum machine++, it's definitely worth considering.

On the other end of the spectrum, I've also got a Drumbrute Impact, and it's a lot of fun and very immediate.
Wait, did you buy my Digitakt? Can't even remember.

Digitakt is supercool for working with samples. also as a sequenzer for midi or eurorack equiment ( with midi2CV)
while i have a hard time to imagine the M:samples beeing cool to work with.
But i totally like the M:cycles on the other side.
......elektron sequenzer Fan myself !
Thumbs up for the DT ! and M:Cycles !

but i just can´t help me any longer.
i nolonger enjoy to sit on a drummachine and programm anything.
....i just want to play a instrument and "feel lilke making music".
Doing beats from there.

I loathe programming drums.
But I still like digging and chopping breaks.

Edit:
At least getting the fretless has guilted me into practicing even more.

I always have the feeling that I don't deserve/need more stuff. Woodshed to compensate I guess.
