Maybe check out the possibility of installing a "dummy coil" to eliminate the 60 cycle hum?
I personally prefer single coils on my jazz, The hum was never an issue for me.
Noise gate can also help, check out some ISP pedals. I own and really like the most recent small one the Deci-mate.
Might be an awesome tool for you also since you love dirt on your signal.

So I’m back to the what to do about the hum. The new pickup sounds great at home and in my space (love it though my amp at volume) but there’s a good deal of 60hz noise in both places. Even just clean looping you can really hear it build up. I’m thinking I’ll try out the Zen Blade since I have it, but if I like the Big Blade better, maybe upgrade to foil shielding in the pickup cavity and order the ISP.

With higher gain settings, the Zen bridge PU I have wired in series can show some noise. If you drop in the Zen be sure to try it in both a series and parallel wiring.

With better shielding you should get very little noise. Shield under the pickup cavity as well.
 
There’s something satisfying about modular that doesn’t always translate from patching and development to the end product, yet still makes all the knob turning enjoyable.

While the finished product isn’t musically that impressive, I did just do the following:

8 note sequence using Qu Bit Bloom. Simple arpeggio of a major chord.

I clocked the rate with Pam’s New Workout.

I also used PNW to set up a square wave that modulates the root note of the sequence, so that the second 4 notes go up to a new root, based on the wave intensity/amplitude. This created a 1-4 progression.

Then I let the bloom mutate the sequence so every 8 notes it mutates the original sequence into a new branch that’s still based on the original sequence. Keep in mind the new mutated sequences are still having the root note modulated by the PNW square wave every 4 steps.

The end result is a seemingly perpetual set of arpeggios changing every 4 steps.

Of course that’s all running into a clock sync delay set to ping pong.

It’s not art yet, but it was a good brain exercise.

I always forget to use Pam’s for LFO’s. I just set up different clocks with it. Gotta remember that!
 
not that anyone asked (so ignore if it’s too pedantic)

ime, perfect 4ths, 5ths and 8ves are the hardest to get to *sound* in tune because of the strength of the overtones of each note (they’re more likely to clash). you fudge the others a bit more.

also, i think trying to use barre chord style stuff is a losing battle—partially for the reason given above and partially because of those hand positions.

my usual mo is to forego use of the 5th in a chord in a close position (especially low). partially because of the above and because it’s often the least interesting part of the chord (b5/#4 are more interesting/important, imo). so i use a lot of 3rds, 6ths, 7ths, 9ths, 11ths. however, a lot of the voicings i favor will have a perfect 5th buried in the upper voices (1-6-10; 1-7-#11).

and (gawd this is long) i think it’s more interesting to break things up into two snd three notes and rhythmically. gives more space and movement. (and you can leave out the root.)

imo, practicing fretless everyday is more important than fretted (if you have to choose) and it will help your fretted playing.

btw, if you’re playing pizz, and upright is easier to “play in tune” because you hear fewer overtones snd harmonics than you would in electric. bring out the bow and that goes away fast.

oh yeah, practicing fretless with a pick can also make intonation more noticeable.

As far as I tell, it’s mostly about more options for keyboardists. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I’m mulling over which desktop unit to get if I want a desktop poly module. And waiting to see if the new UDO release is a module rather than a keyboard.
 
the new asm stuff seems to be an answer to (1) the size of the korg wavestate (etc.) coupled with something that can work in only battery power and (2) people’s desire for a keyboard controller that’s bigger than 49 keys coupled with the bitimbral/voice count of the summit.

seems smart, but i’m okay with what i have now.
