It’s not NAMM but has become an occasion for product announcements, hence, lots of product announcements all of a sudden.

Thanks for posting that! I only became aware of it this year with Moog posting a lot about their tent and someone I know locally going and posting a lot. I became aware of a new artist through Moog - Hinako Omori - she did a pretty cool performance there in the tent with a Grandmother and loopers and voice. Nice to know more of the background of the event!

nick batt does some nice in-depth reviews of synths on the sonicstate yt channel. i’ve never seen him out and out slag things, but you do get a good sense on a synth. (i don’t recall him doing effects reviews.)

he’s pretty good at this stuff, but not at the granular level of loopop.

Loopop is one of those freaks who accidentally opens the owners manual to the right page, assuming he’s ever needed an owners manual. Dude just appears to grasp the complexity of any piece of gear he touches. I just canceled Patreon support for a certain YouTuber, so maybe I should support Loopop. Sure have learned a lot from him. Then again, he’s cost me a lot of money too

I still say that Ricky Tinez dude is sometimes a great synth/hardware reviewer. You can’t share any of his product reviews without someone feeling obliged to point out that his music sucks. And to be sure, I think his music sucks. Dated, vanilla house music for sure, but he seems to have a huge heart and is often great at explaining new gear.

No new updates, surprisingly. What I did use worked fine.

the iridium mpe seems to work well for me. i would've known more if i'd gotten the mcmillen k-board 49 i'd purchased off of reverb . . . getting a little uneasy that they guy might be stiffing me. allegedly in va for family emergency (he's allegedly from nashville), but haven't heard a peep in a week . . . was all jazzed to get into it.

@steubig that sucks. The good news is I’ve seen a few threads with sellers complaining that Reverb is super slanted towards buyers...so hopefully you’ll be protected.

Thanks for the Iridium updates @steubig and @lordradish . Are both of you happy with the hardware quality and reliability? Is it fun to program? There is lots of complaining about bugs on the Gearspace thread but that could just a few people and the general negative vibe of that place.

I have been dragging the laptop to the practice space for my instrumental band and I hate it. I think I want a hardware solution.

I plugged my Linnstrument into my wife’s Continuumini and wow. The only bummer is you have to program it with a computer. But there are actually some decent presets already. And while you can get Max 2 notes off the mini, there is full MPE with the Linnstrument.

So, a gear decision!

I need: good bass mono synth, some poly possibilities (think bitimbral) and sample playback and/or granular. Want MPE. Must play well with Linnstrument.

Option 1: modular. It’s what I was doing pre-pandemic, but there is no patch memory. I could get the EaganMatrix module for poly and then there’s patch memory for part of it. I already get killer basses out of it and can get some wild effects.

Option 2: Monosynth*, mixer, and either a Hydrasynth or Continuumini. Advantage: I can make the whole thing like a DJ coffin. Patch memory. Disadvantage, would I like the Hydrasynth for MPE?

Option 3: Iridium. Advantage: just one machine to keep track of, most portable, two timbres at once. But would I like it as a do-all synth?

*There is a DSI mopho keys in the space already that I bought in 2010 and is used by the keyboardist in my dad rock band. I might get something else, though.

Long drive home today, which got my mind wandering…realized the new Norand Mono has some cv ins and outs, so I clocked it with Pam’s, ran some cv pitch to my Cwejman VCO-2RM and MMF-1s filter and ran both the Norand and the Cwejman through the Make Noise Mimeophon. Some really cool possibilities there

@HotelX : the problem with the iPad is the touch screen. I’m switching between touch guitar and Linnstrument during songs and I have to wear gloves to play the touch guitar. Otherwise, iPad would be a contender.

As for a Buchla system. OMG. Want. But not MPE or poly.

i expect that it will get sorted. i just needed to bitch about it.

both the iridium and the hydra sound great and are easy and dun to program. the iridium is probably deeper in that it has more options for types of synthesis. however, you could get about three hydra desktops for the price of one iridium. the iridium is probably a bit more naturally sweet sounding. i rolf is a genius and that the asm folks have created a future classic.

hydra desktop is smaller. (i’m mentioning desktop because of your linnstrument.)

the iridium does have some build issues. the person who repaired mine outlined some poor design choices in terms how the chassis is held together and how the screen adheres to the front.

the hydra seems rock solid.

i’m running my linnstrument into my hydra desktop. i like it well for that. so mpe is very functional.

the mcmillen was (is?) for the iridium.

even though my long-term plan has been to use the iridium live, i do have qualms about that as i think it is a bit less robust. (i could be wrong.) the hydra does not give me those worries.

both iridium and hydra can be programmed as mono voice. both have decent effects.

Thanks. This basically eliminates the Iridium for me. I want something reliable. So that’s down to two options. I read that Hydra has a couple bugs if you put it in mono mode and MPE at the same time. But I could just not do that...
