I remember that, my first live gig computer setup was a Windows 3.11 PC mini tower in a road case, with a CRT monitor + keyboard and trackball in another case.
I had the new SoundBlaster AWE32 card with the EMU synth/sampler chip and 4 MB of sample RAM.
That was a great setup, with a Roland D10 keyboard used as a midi controller, into Cakewalk 3 using the Cakewalk CAL programming to make keyboard shortcuts to load media files.
There was some samples (soundFont files) I wanted advertised in Future Music magazine and I had to make a toll call halfway around the world to a B.B.S download site, the download took nearly an hour on a 14k modem, and the toll call cost about a days wages.

Impressive. No live gigs on computer in the 1990s (just standard dinner jazz and indy rock band stuff), but I was pretty excited when the original MOTU 2408 came out and I could hook it up to my G3 Mac.
Yeah, that was in the mid 90's, and having to occasionally reboot the computer mid song at a gig really blew my faith in computers at live shows.
Never used a computer for sounds at a gig since, Windows 3.11 and Win 95 just wasn't up to it,
although I do now use a laptop for running the show DMX lighting and video projection, with a spare backup laptop just in case.

i had a computer with Windows 3.11 and it never occurred to me to try performing with it.
It wasn't off. It was just sustaining a note.

Don't worry. I'm still here. I'm meditating on the Octatrak. I really should just buy it, but I feel like I need to use my other recent purchases first, since once the Octatrack shows up, I'll be in the manual and learning curve land forever.
I'm still pretty fixated on the DFAM/Subharmonicon - I downloaded the manuals and read them both the same day - even downloaded the Mother-32 manual, but I think I can hold off on that one...

Ugh. I feel your pain, literally. Side effect of the cancer drugs is all sorts of intestinal problems. I've had the sh*ts (and exquisite cramps) on and off for 10 days now. Really exhausting.
In happier news, while I had to miss Tuesday's dad rock practice due to dehydration, post-rock got moved to Weds this week (our guitarist worked the election) and I made it last night with the Linnstrument and iPad. @HotelX may be onto something.
However, as is always the case with these kinds of things, I found that I was getting a horrible popping sound through the PA every time I switched a session on AUM. Have a query in about that. But the sounds were every bit as good as what I managed with my laptop, and the touchscreen works ok with my thumb.
I am still thinking about hardware anyway....
