Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

For the record: Not only have I puked and @%##* at the same time, but I was sitting on the toilet @%##*ing at the time and so I wound up puking into my pants.

Still can't figure out why the girl I was with that night didn't marry me...

I’ve had girlfriends stay with me after disasters from each end, but I never presented any of my significant others with the opportunity to graciously endure that scenario. While I’m loathe to make relationship comments on TB, if you find such a partner, you should probably hang on.

Any reason to consider the Samples? Other than to save a few bucks.

I’ve heard some great music done on the Samples and Cycles. Together they make a formidable groovebox kinda thing. Simplicity can be nice at times. I’d personally go with the Digitakt. You can sample into it (can only load files from the computer on Model:Samples) and you get an 8 track Elektron midi sequencer in addition to the 8 sampler channels. 16 tracks of great sequencing power. Also love the envelopes. The Octatrack has a steep learning curve at the very start, but is the fastest and easiest to use once you get over that hump. The versatility of the Octatrack just can’t be beat.

Stomach flu since Monday.
Someone end me.
Can finally hold fluids for the 1st time in 48 hours

Ugh. I feel your pain, literally. Side effect of the cancer drugs is all sorts of intestinal problems. I've had the sh*ts (and exquisite cramps) on and off for 10 days now. Really exhausting.

You too!

Messed around with prime number length patterns against a 4/4 bass and perc. Not sure it really worked, but it was fun. Pretty much just the Norand Mono and a Cwejman VCO and filter played into Logic for hours, then chopped and assembled into this little opus :)

Digitakt doesn't do stereo sampling.
(Like from vinyl or other similar sources)

Octatrack...one day...one day.....
I'll make just as bad music on stuff way more expensive.

Haha! True, Digitakt isn’t stereo. It’s billed as a drum sampler, but it’s a crazy good machine and things can get ‘stereoized’ after the fact. Seriously, it’s awesome. That said, I have so many loops and one shots from various failed experiment or unfinished songs (same thing), it could be fun and easy to load those into a simple machine and put the pieces together. I’d have to look at the Samples more seriously since I never really thought about that sort of thing after getting an Octatrack. :Samples and :Cycles are both on sale at the moment too, so I get the temptation. Polyend Tracker and 1010 BlackBox are also serious contenders. The tracker style sequencing in the Polyend is very different and could be great fun, but I don’t know yet. Was hoping a new amazing sequencer would be announced at Superbooth, but nothing so far. If I could get an Oxi One, I’d try it. Can’t seem to pull the trigger on the Squarp Pyramid for some reason

Stereoized??!
Help me out here.
:)

I called my local GC - they have the Sound Studio bundle I want - and I realized I have a synth and a bass I can trade in - both I could probably do better trying to sell on my own but sometimes you just want that gratification... I held off and didn't take it in today, maybe next week if I don't research some other areas...

And I did pull my Doepfer MAQ16/3 out of the box - need to locate the power supply (shouldn't be a problem) and pull out the Sirin and get my MAQ chops together again!

totally agree on the cycles plus samples.
and anyway on the digitakt.
I never had the :samples. With no direct sample load its not for me.
But i see its appeal otherwise. anyway for how low you can have them, even here.
And i have in fact two DTs. One is my main sequenzer for my modular.
A DT anyday over the :samples, finally.

DT can do the "track mute states per pattern" thing. Thats totally crucial for me !
OT does NOT ! .....another reason i could not go back to the OT when i had a MKII for a few years lieing around. Sold it finally this year. hard decission. My heart is with the OT.

i just recognised the other day that the cycles is also not doing that "track mutestates per pattern" thing. bummer. I kind of overlooked that bevore.
Or, i switched a setting somewhere and can´t find it again. lol

@dukeorock
Have you looked at the WMD Metron as an option, instead of the Erica Black?

I just watched a demo and kinda liked what I saw. It is more expensive, and still a lot of hp.

Edit - Dang. Just noticed the Voltera add-on, or some similar device is needed for melodic stuff.

Yeah, as far as I know, Model:Cycles doesnt the save mute states per pattern. Bummer too!

There’s some pretty easy workarounds on the Octatrack for mute states. The obvious one is to copy the pattern and make each pattern a different Part, then add mutes. I typically just use Scenes for that operation. Set up the different mute groups I want on different Scenes. Works well enough for me :)
The Digitakt was the the first hardware piece I purchased when I seriously got back into doing hardware based electronic stuff several years ago. I sold it a few months after getting the Octatrack, but I don’t have a negative thing to say about it. It’s a fantastic instrument.

Yep! The Metron needs the Voltera to do melodies. If I were going to get a eurorack sequencer, it would be the Erica Black Sequencer. Other cool ones to me are the UTSA or 512 Vector

Maybe it’s a language thing but I’m not sure what this is or how you use it. Then again I don’t have a DT.
tracks can be muted or be active.
in the DT is that "mute state" of each track, part of whats saved within each pattern.
The track volume as such on top of that also.

in the octatrack is that coupled to the "Parts". But you have only 4 "parts" per 16 patterns. If you chnage any such setting, is it chnaged in any pattren that sues that same "part".
( thats the main confusing bit with the OT, at least for beginners / and takes you quite a bit of freedom away)

For some styles is a global "mutestate of the tracks" desireable.
But for more creative or experimental music would you lose alots of arrangement flexibility.
while i personally never would use such think like the arranger in the OT, which delivers the mutestate per track functionality, finally.

any place we can hear this huge set up?

The need for ‘Parts’ is one of my least favorite things about the Octatrack. It’s fine, and 4 Parts per 16 patterns usually is plenty for me, but I’d prefer a different solution. I used the Arranger ONCE. I prefer to come up with a live arrangement and play everything into the DAW by hand. I also found Pickup Machines to be a bit fussy, so I have used those in ages either. May revisit it one day. My main reasons for sticking with the Octatrack over the Digitakt are Scenes (the coolest thing ever!), 3 LFO’s per track and stereo sampling. I also find live sampling and midi sequencing to be better on the OT for me, but Scenes are such a cool and powerful thing that makes the OT seem more like an instrument to me
