I started working on trying to record a little something. I got caught up in EQ and effects settings. I always forget how things sound going direct with headphones. The wet/dry mix feels different than it does through the monitors. The single coil hum suddenly pops out in a way that it hadn’t before, so I started tweaking pickup settings. I tried not to let those technical bits get in the way of the new bass joy.
Definitely gonna try some new strings too. I need to research what folks are using for flats. I’ve had good luck with Chromes before. Not sure I’m ready to try the TI ones. I’ll ask around in the F Bass thread.

I played a fretless 6-string F Bass once 30-something years ago and ever since it's been on my GAS list...eventually Imma have to succumb to temptation! 'Til then I'll just have to live vicariously through your Crimson Ghost. Enjoy.
It was the white whale. I’ve owned some really nice basses, and still have a couple in the collection. I had reached a point where I had a sense of how nice “nice” could be, and I reached my threshold for “upgrade” purchases. But there’s always been something fascinating about the F Bass to me and I couldn’t let this chance go by. The new prices have bumped up in recent years, and the color combos on the used ones have never grabbed me. When I saw that red with the grain pattern, and that slab of unlined ebony, it was all over. Black hardware too? Click.
There’s a lot going on with that bass. I feel like I’m looking at one of the magazines they had in doctors’ office waiting rooms, where there’s a picture with the caption “Can you find the 12 things that are out of place?”
Tracking atm....will tell you what pieces and parts are on that thing.
It sounds freaking amazing though.
Played everything from funk to jazz to metal with it.
Zero issues, gigged hard built like a tank.
well, you know a squier would be just as good.
ti flats have been my mainstay for 25 years or more.
i was set to try some pyramids on my new headless pair, but the headpieces didn’t place nice with them, so i’m investigating new headpieces.

Thought so. My wife bought me a matched pair of those ~15 years ago, back when they were only $99 each. Never found anything they seemed particularly good on...until a drummer/producer I was working with asked if I had something for overheads that was less bright than my AKG C451E. I put up a pair of the Kel HM-1s and they've been my go-to ever since.
For what I do, absolutely
I am well aware that I bought art that just happens to also work as a bass. If anyone puts a coffee cup on it, they better remember to use a coaster.
Sold my pair for rent.

I did put TIs on my fretless and I really like them. If I could get the flatwound high C from LaBella then I'd use those, but the TIs are fantastic. The LaBellas have something that I can't really put into words, but they just work for me. Like any other flatwound, they take some time to break in, but they're gorgeous.
Man...my ears can't handle the abuse, but some days I just want to be in a post rock band.
I think the folks here could get past the language (f bombs) and appreciate the message. This one is hitting home. I feel seen.

I suffered from that most of my life, and I got so little done because I was always in my own way..only in the past few years have I realized that for me to reach any goal (write music, practicing, creating a new band, making a recording, exercising, having healthy relationships in my life) then I first need to value myself fully....today....however I am in this moment. This is always something that I have to work on at every moment of every day. Then I work on enjoying every moment for what it is, not for what I expect or want it to be. Always work. Man....this stuff is hard.
I just made my first record last week of my own music with my own group. Every step of the way was a valuable lesson. After we finished (one day, six musicians, no rehearsals or gigs beforehand...) I've been listening back...and it's been beyond challenging. Hating on my own playing, regretting making it without being about to get the musicians all together beforehand...but you know what? We did it. It may not be perfect, but we did it. I reached the goal that I had set for myself. It may not have been what I had hoped for, but we reached the goal and had a great time. Another lesson of appreciating life for what it is, and not what I think that I want it to be.
Looking forward to listening to the audio that you linked to. Thanks for that. I'm always thinking about this stuff.

when i record my written stuff, i will often sacrifice exactitude for energy.
imo, things that are perfect without some emotional content or danger (“is it going to fall apart?”) are really boring.
so… are you worried that it’s not “perfect” or that you all didn’t bring it?
