Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

@emjazz

when i record my written stuff, i will often sacrifice exactitude for energy.

imo, things that are perfect without some emotional content or danger (“is it going to fall apart?”) are really boring.

so… are you worried that it’s not “perfect” or that you all didn’t bring it?
That I didn't bring it on everything, but thankfully I'm going back to re track some spots. This was the first time organizing something like this, and my own playing took a bit of a back seat by the time I got to the studio.
It was also the first time in a more stressed (time limit/$) environment where I had to express what was in my head beyond what was written on the page. Great learning experience.
Some of the tunes were written to be simple and extremely interactive. Usually those are things that just need to be played together. In the same situation I may not have such open pieces, unless it's with people that regularly play together (this wasn't that case)
All in all it was a great learning experience.

got it.

being the band leader and producer and taskmaster in a situation like that is always intense. so much to juggle.

and i’m a big fan of doing gigs to get the band to gell with the material and each other.

congrats on doing it.

now comes the fun of mixing. :meh:

Hahahaha....I was going to be there for the mixing, but I found out the engineer's track record for what he's mixed....and am going to let him do his thing. I trust him, and it's one last thing that I'll have to worry about.

i have someone i’ve worked with on recording and mixing stuff for 25 years. i always trust his roughs, but i do nitpick certain things as we get to the final.

Yeah, once we re track and edit a few things, he'll mix it all and send it my way. I'll make notes and send them back. This will be my first time working with him, so we'll see how it goes...but I really like the sound of other records that he's made.

I've been getting much more into ambient, especially attaching intros/bridges to things that are more upbeat prog rock, but this Copilotfx Broadcast can do some seriously wild stuff that is very applicable to ambient. Controlling delay time is pretty cool, and the CV out I have been using with the LFO of the Bass MuRF. Still need some things to wire a proper board, but utility pedals are super fun. Currently playing with this combination:

I am on the Cosmos waiting list and have heard nothing.

I just reached out to SOMA and got an update, but other than confirming that it's not shipping in early September (duh!) like they said it would when I got in the queue in July, I'm still not entirely clear when it will ship:

SOMA: "The waiting time at the moment is around 3 months according to the waiting list. We start selling at the end of October."
Me: "Thanks, is that three months from when I first asked to be on the list (26 July 2012) or three months from now, or three months from the end of October, or...?"
SOMA: "From the beginning of the sale, so from the end of October."

So I guess they start selling at the end of October...and I think they're telling me that there's a 3 month wait list of folks who signed up before I did on July 26?

So expect a NPD post in January maybe?

If you really want portable, the M8 tracker is what a lot of folks are talking about ditching their Polyends for.

I know I'm days late here, but the M8 is a wild combination of hobbies/interests that I didn't ever expect to see. Mechanical Keyboards + Trackers?! It even uses the Teensy, goshdang. $450 seems awfully steep for the components though - especially if it's based on LSDJ.
