American Dream or Great Depression?

That goes along with the current mortgage debacle. Throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Most people were paying their mortgages on time. That of course draws no attention.
I've often thought that since our government represents the people that the people should be able to determine what the government spends our money on. I'm not saying all of it, but let's say something like half of it. So 50 percent goes to the state and federal goverment as it does now, and then for the other 50 percent the taxpayer can determine how the money is divided between certain categories. Education, Defense, etc. Perhaps each category could be the same as the departments that are headed by secretaries. I'm not sure exactly on the logistics, but this would definitely be a better representation of the people than the detached, corrupt mess that we have right now.
Sure... you'd just need to get the majority of people to get off their apathetic butts and do something.

On the mortgage issue, as much as people love to look at it in black and white, it's more involved than they think. I've seen blame ascribed in many directions and no particular participants' hands are totally clean. For example, if you can afford a $300k house house based on your current circumstances and... wait for it... THINGS CHANGE, who automatically gets the blame?
When you overbuild in an area, who do you blame?
When housing values drop as fast as they rose... ?
Anyone complaining about the default rate on commercial properties?
I see the same stereotypical thinking rolled out on this issue over and over again. It may seem simple to assess blame and it is... if you don't bother with the details.

They all have to pay taxes. They can opt to not do it and just hand over all their tax money to the government like we do now. If they don't pay taxes, then they can express their opinions on things by voting.

ya, they only care about one thing. MONEY! Any bodies can see it with eyes. Just like stock, revolving around the true evil.
In this time, people cannot be happy and thankful for what they possess and some will kill for what they believe. With a mindset that what they think is right, not even considering the possibility that some may have different opinions.
Just like all the soldiers who tool for these masters, holding the name of god as they kill. Being just as guilty as a murderer.
When those in charge are the one who cause the conflict.
Then they make us fund the wars, with taxes.
The people should not be punished for the greed of those in power.
I am unemployed and I will never work. I play bass, and i love it.
Gigs are all i need to survive so far...I pay rent by it and live well to.
But no gig is certain. And i will gladly sleep outside, if i ever lose.
lol oh yea I don't pay taxes either. Income tax is another BS thing, and i won't even begin on how much i think the psychiatry industry keeps our people druged.
Not to sound like a herbalist either, but hemp is one of the greatest plants. It has proteins in it which can aid survival,it can make rope, cloths, houses and even a car was built from hemp resin in like 1940 or something. I think it even ran on hemp and was biodegradable.
Oh yea, there are also 25,000 known uses for it.
I think it can just fall in line with the sub divisions we already have. Dept of Education. Dept. of Defense. Dept. of Agriculture. etc. Maybe we decide another way. I'm not sure.
I've been where you are. All I can say is that it's great now when you're young, but the system, unfortunately is bigger than you. It will beat you down. You will conform. Sad to say that this the truth.
just so you know you should be paying taxes on that gig money.
if the IRS finds out you're not you will probably end up in jail for tax evasion.
our government is a direct reflection of the people it represents. Money money money.
you're failing to fund the government that given the life you're living will undoubtedly end up supporting you.

Take it from me: It's N - E - V - E - R that bad! Remember that:
(1) It's a political season, when everyone is running on this silly concept of "change," that's never defined and never explained in any concrete way. The politicians just want to make sure that YOU know that "as bad as things are," help's on the way because "I represent change."
(2) Good news does NOT sell newspapers. Doom and gloom is the trick for that. And the vaunted mainstream media is constantly hyping things up so that you'll be sure to "stay tuned." For instance, take this quip about "a record number of Americans on food stamps." How does that reconcile with "a record number of AMERICANS," period?
There are a LOT more people here now than there were, and the boom in population the last few years has been fueled in large part by illegal migration of people who have been told they can bilk the system. Many of them do, indeed, qualify for "food stamps," no questions asked.
In short, there are a LOT of things going on that make up this "pat" story about "all these people going on food stamps."
But what is YOUR situation? Me, I'm in Houston, and I don't know a single, solitary person who's "struggling" in the way that the MSM is trying to portray. Yeah, gas and food prices are up (thanks in large part to the shortsightedness of those self-same politicos, who won't get out of the way and let our great system work as it should). But people in large part are doing just fine.
But that story (1) doesn't help politicians get elected on an obscure platform of "change," and (2) doesn't sell papers, so it goes unreported.
So, no. No, things aren't as bad as they'd like you to think.
Or here's a thought:
How about if the government is restricted to ONLY its constitutionally-mandated roles - remember, if it's not "enumerated," it's NOT the government's business - and we all share in the WINDFALL of all this money that WOULD have gone for these unconstitutional government activities.
