You'll have to define affordable. For example an MIA Fender P or J will cost less than a Stingray or a Bongo.

Also, buying used is a great way to go. Find ANY used Sadowsky, Valenti, or US Lakland that is within your financial reach, and I doubt you will regret buying it.

if ya want new, probly the best for the least amount of cash would be Carvin. You're talkin at least, er.. 800 bux to at most 1700.

Godin are made in the US from Canadian materials. Their freeway line is probably the most "affordable" US made bass. They retail for less than a Fender Highway 1.
MusicMan SUBs are US made and are pretty cheap used. No use buying them new, you can get the actual MM bass for what the SUB sells for new.
Stopped making those a year or two ago.
As far as affordable, it depends what you call affordable, but:

^ Sites like ThePerfectBass still sell new SUBs even though they are out of production. That's the basis for my argument.

SUBs are actual EBMM basses. And they're not made any more, so there are practically no new ones left.
Actually, they're US assembled from Canadian-made bodies and necks. Everything from initial carving to fretwork is done in Canada, then they get shipped to Godin's New Hampshire factory to be put together and sold as domestic axes.
Weird, this is the second time I've had this convo to-night. there's not usually much Godin chatter around here... which is too bad because they're a great buy.
