Ampeg pf-800 update: shut down!

First off, only the PF-500 and SVT 7 Pro had issues, which have been long fixed. The rest of their amps just have occasional duds that slip through, just like any other amp manufacturer in the world, and that includes the 800. Second, compensated? Sorry but you obviously don't have any idea how B-level endorsements work. Yes, I get discounts on Ampeg gear. Yes, Ampeg has sent me a very occasional small ticket freebie. But I do not get paid a cent to be an endorser, the only money that has ever been exchanged between Ampeg and me is from my bank account to theirs, I completely reject and resent the idea that I'm being paid, and I will pay $1000 to anyone who can prove otherwise. I am one of the most helpful people on this board, often helping people with other amps besides Ampeg, I've been very complimentary to other manufacturers when I think it's warranted, and most people on here respect me because I am a straight shooter who isn't about to jeopardize that reputation over a freaking discount. So I respectfully suggest you cease the slander.
1000% true! I chatted quite a bit with Jimmy about all sorts of gear stuff. He never once put down any other brands or tried to make me buy an ampeg. And he's put up with my dumb questions and opinions for years. I'd rather drop a duce in the old CBGB's head, or even maybe at Walmart, than say different or take him up on the $1000 bet. A lot of brand loyal/non-edorsing here are a lot more forceful in pushing their views on others. Jimmy's a man of character and deserves to be respected.

Woah I didn't expect this thread to go this route. I figured we would all just discuss the issue and share thoughts and opinions about it. Seems to have taken a bit of a negative turn. Oh well, thats the way it goes sometimes. I still appreciate everyones thoughts. I'll be sure to post how the Peavy mini mega does after I receive it.

Hopefully they won't do what GC did to me once - i returned a new GK 115 cab that arrived with a blown tweeter. And I received - a GK 115 with a blown tweeter. Yep, same cab.
I brought in my PF-50T to Long and Mcquade for warranty service because it had an intermittent high pitched noise. There was less than a month left on the 2 year warranty. Loud Technologies sent back a brand new amp.

I'm currently using a Mini Mega and I'm digging it so far. It's got tremendous power and a great set of controls. You can pretty much make it sound any way you want. You'll also find it a bit lighter than the Ampeg. One downside is that the fan is a little noisy and being on the top of the unit, you can't put anything on top of it.
Curious how it sounds compared to the Ampeg amps. I really like the tone of Ampeg so I'm hoping it's not too far from it. Or at least capable of getting close with some tweaking. From what i can tell it has everything I'm looking for. It should be here sometime tomorrow and I'm pretty anxious to try it out.

I know not really a Peavey thread but lately, I've started placing the Gain Knob @ 2:00, Master @ 11:00 on my MiniMega 1K. I'm getting a real nice grindy tone like I did with my PF800 when I dig in. This with a GK-CX210+Carvin SB5000. Small-med gigs, backyard parties, no PA support. Very nice, really diggin it.

Never used the MiniMega set like this before, again very nice. But I sure liked my PF800(x2) while I owned them. Too bad for me, both, had shut down issues. My Ampeg re-i V4B+212AV still killing it.

Sounds like you favor the pf-800? It sure is a great sounding amp. Really bummed me out to have to send it back. And I thought about trying another but after seeing that a few people have gone through multiple units I just didn't want to take the chance. I've never had anything Peavy before so I'm hoping that it delivers. If not maybe I'll go ahead and give the Ampeg one more shot.

If it were me I'd be sure to bring a spare amp.

@versicolor I think you'll like the Peavey MM 1K pretty well. I never use the Crunch button but I do keep the Punch button in all the time. It has a huge sound, nice variety of sounds with all those lit buttons, gets very clean and as I just found out, pretty dirty with just the Gain rolled up. You may like and get more use of the Crunch button, if you like its' tone. Play around with some different settings to see what tones you find. I really like this amp.

I always carry a backup in the SUV. After those 3 shut downs of the PF800's, I had the Genz Benz Streamliner 900 as backup.
Now, it' either a GK-MB800, TC-E BH550 or the MiniMega as backup. Depending on which of these 3 start. I like to mix it up. :bassist:
The Streamliner 900 should never be a backup amp; it's a first string starter. Sorry I ever sold it. :rollno:
