Ampeg PF350/500 Part V

Gig tested my PF350 yesterday at an outdoor gig with a fairly big band- 3pc horn section, piano, organ, drums, conga, guitar & bass. It had a beautiful big sound with my SVT 210 cabinet. I only needed the volume about 1/2 way up, with the gain set at 2:00.

Now, because I can't leave well enough alone, I had to try something. I double on cello, and for reading scores, I like the extended range. I've been threatening to tune a bass in cello tuning for a while. Finally yesterday, I did it. I didn't restring, just retuned the J-bass as is. The low string was a little floppy tuned down to C, but it wasn't horribly buzzy on the frets and it held tune. The sound was a little indistinct, however. I don't know if the cab or the amp couldn't take it, or if it was just the lack of string tension. Any thoughts?

Thanks Matt! Just for kicks I turned it up to put it through its paces with the Hartke 410. I am set up in the basement and my 17 year old son's bedroom is not too far away. I heard him laughing while i was playing and his brother came out and told me I was knocking pics off his wall! Too much fun!

This is making my PF350, 2x210av stack REALLY sound like a mini fridge!

J!

Just got my PF500 back from the local authorized service center. I used it at a gig with no problems, and the next time I turned the amp on - it was stuck in fault mode. I didn't smell anything fry like my first PF I had. The tech told me that two output MOSFETS had gone out - and that he's seen that in other class D amps also. Since he only had it in the shop for 3 days and it was covered under warranty - I can't complain too much. Used it last night for practice and it was good as new.

Does anyone know if the DI out of the PF500 is still going to work if I use my Tech21 VT Bass (character series) as a preamp (bass -> VT -> power amp in of the PF500) or will it be dead?
And how about this: Bass -> PF500 input, VT out -> power amp in of the PF500 and VT in -> preamp out of the PF500?
If I use the VT between into the FX return, the DI should definitely still work, right?

BTW: Wren and Cuff should definitely get a mid-european distributor!!!

anyone heard a comparison between the new 115LF compared to the 115HE? i guess the major differences are the rear shelf port of the lf plus the lf has new handles. so the HE is not ported nor sealed correct? Anyways thinking of running both under a PF head. Should i run two of the same or would it be good to have an LF and and HE? Thanks for ur knowledge and opinions

well, despite everyone with the problems on here, I took a chance on a used pf500, for $260 on local CL. Plugged it into my Basson 210 500w cab @ 4ohms - cranked the eqs around with master at 3 o'clock and gain just barely peaking. Not a bad "OD" sound, but probably will rely of effects to get my OD. Anyways about 45 minutes of punishing my cab, house, neighbors, and ears, without any clipping problem, cutting out, or even a hickup. And this was much higher than I ran my older 350w head at any gig.

I think its a keeper! Can't wait to plug into my friend's 810. Hoping no problems arise, but I'm pretty happy with it so far. Has a clearer tone than my last ampeg rackmount head. Now I have to go through and re-do my line 6 again. Yay!
