Bah...pure tone schmure tone. Turn the knobs to where it sounds good. If it happens to be with everything at noon, so be it. But "purest tone" is one of those buzzwords invented by someone without a clue of what "pure tone" is, and doesn't realize that it doesn't exist.

LOL! Brutal... but true. :)

I've seen and heard Ross Valory use everything from Fenders to Steinbergers to Ovations to Kubickis to the MM's he's using now...even used to use a Peavey T-40! The only time he ever sounded different to me is when he used an Ovation for "Don't Stop Believin" and "Who's Crying Now." Other than that, he might as well have been using the same bass the whole time. It's the hands.

Ross was a Curbow endorser as well, if I recall.

Played my PF500 through an SVT 1510 last night and REALLY loved the sound. The host of our jam sessions had it in the back of his basement for a few years and asked if I would like to give it a shot. Great ampeg tone! I read up on the 1510s on TB and as advised - set the horn to -6 and I could really get a nice warm tone with some nice clarity on the D and G sttrings and when playing high up on the neck. The band really like the sound as well - lots of compliments. Heard the 10s were easily blown but so far -so good. Also - just wanted to put in a plug for this forum - some really great information here - you just gotta look!

does anyone know, if the instrument input of the PF500 gets deactivated when there is an external preamp in the power amp in or can they both work at the same time?

i'm thinking of using an a/b pedal, so i can easily switch between my tech21 vt bass and the PF500s preamp.

so: bass -> a/b pedal
a-> PF500 instrument input
b -> tech21 vt bass -> power amp in of the PF500

would this be possible?

HI!

After months of doubt and consideration I got myself a second hand Ampeg PF_500 paired with a GK mbe 212.

I've been playing with it for a month and could not be happier... loud, clear, focused and DEEP if I want to. I play Loud Krautrock with drums/guitars/vocals/electronic noise and I have no problem getting the desired volume and tone. my settings right now are bass at 1, mids at 2 (LOW mids, position 1) and treble at 10 oclock. I run a vt bass in front so i keep the gain so it only lights up eventually. No compresion.

I'm still afraid of it going into fault mode... but so far, so good! and I'm the second owner of this head... Just my 2 cents!

Ok, so I fired up my PF 500 with the 210 HF cab today and I get a farting noise on certain notes on the E string. So I take off the top cover with the PF500 head and moved it to the floor to check on the speakers and the cab, tightened some screws and played with the cover and head off the cab and the farting issue is gone. I mount the cover and head back onto the cab and sure enough, the issue comes back again.

Any ideas?

Can you record the fartiest note and put the track on repeat through your amp - leaving your hands free to find the sympathetic vibration.?

perhaps the sealing material between the cab top and the top that the amp is attached to is not consistent anymore because of use, and air may be escaping through the gap and causing a farting noise ? worth checking.
