Ampeg PF500/PF350 Pt II.5

Ya man, I've got mine now and it's rockin'...can't wait to fire it up on my oldies gig tomorrow night!

Also, I got a BA108 and a BA110 while I was at it. They are amazing little practice amps with a lot of ass to them. I was quite pleasantly surprised to hear how big the low end is in the BA108. I can't recall ever hearing a practice amp that small with that kind of low end. Not the loudest amps ever, but very respectable and they hold together even when you try to spank them good. Going to try them on my weekly upright jazz gig this Sunday. Been using my Micro VR, but I thought it was time to downsize ;)

I currently have a Hartke HyDrive 5210c (LH500 head) sitting atop an HX115. I'm dying to try a Micro VR, PF350 or PF500........or even an SVT7PRO (big stretch, i know). Anyone have any idea or thoughts on what any of those would sound like through my 2x10"/1x15" HyDrive setup? I haven't had time to go to the local Sam Ash (closest thing to me) and try it myself.

Might the Micro VR sound good through either the 2x10s or the 1x15? Or try the PF series instead?

I don't NEED any of them. I'd just like to give Ampeg amps a try here at the house. And seeing JimmyM's status now I'm more inclined to buy something Ampeg.
Aw shucks...thanks bro! That means a lot.

Suddenlysane

I'm running a PF-500 through 2 HX-115's and it sounds killer.
Those cabs handle the range of tones available with the 500 without any issues. I run with the tweets off and get lots of punchy mids and huge bottom. If I need some sparkle I just turn on the tweets.

Saw my first 108 today at my local AMPEG dealer. Pretty cool and very reasonable ($99), if I needed one. I went in to try and make a deal on my 2nd PF115. We didn't quite get there, but I almost left with that 108.

Now I'm really going to have to make time to go visit the music store. The BA108 and BA110 look like nice little combos. I have a Hartke B300 right now but I could have a practice amp in every room in the house..........which would mean more basses. :hyper:

And it appears that the PF-500s are very popular. Everywhere I've checked they're out, lol.

Tried the PF500 at a local store today. They had a new PF210 there too, so I played it thru that. NICE!
As stated above, nice build quality. & great looks. Great price too-even at local retail prices-which is a BIG shock!
Really makes me tempted to get both the 210 & 115 PF cabs..... :-/
I need new cabs like I need a hole in my head!
I''m glad I got the 7 PRO tho, seems to have a bit more girth & to me at least, does a VERY good job at getting me oh so close to the sound of my old SVT II.
Wow, the 7 PRO & 2xPF cabs would be sweet. 2x PF115's would suit me very nicely thankyou.

Even though Ampeg's my sound, I am friends with Larry Hartke and have a lot of respect for what he does, so he's grandfathered in ;)

You and Larry are good people from my experience. When you are devoted to all things "bass" and don't fight over X is better than Y but the differences in each.......you help people like me....and people like me need help... -.-

Anyhoo, I'm buying a PF-500 when they restock. And I'm gonna tell me wife that JimmyM made me do it. :)

Hi guys I'm from venezuela , I'm new here
i'm writing to you because i want to get a new amp , i have been reading a lot of comments about the ampeg PF and all of them are good .

I'm looking to a modern , punchy and clear sound now I'm playing on midsized gigs with two bands. I play (latin funk , funk rock , reggae and some latin pop) and with the other band . merengue , salsa , cumbia , bachata.

so in order to sound great i really need an amp who can offers me a lot of versatility

i love the sound of the ba115 , i used to have one of them but I'm looking for something better and bigger , i guess is going to be the PF500 but i really don't know which cab should i buy . my question to you is how loud and great quality tone can i get with PF Cab? or should i get a b410hlf or a classic 410.

I'm open to all of your opinions or suggerences about the heads and the cabs .
here in venezuela we dont have big music stores as smash or gc , and the stores we have they always overprice the products so I'm going to buy my rig online .

sorry about my english :) and thanks .

Your English is fine. We can't tell you if it's going to be loud enough for your situation b/c we don't know how loud the band is that you play in. Was the BA115 loud enough? If not, how close was it to being loud enough?

If you like the sound of tens, go with two of those cabs, but personally, I like the 15's in this rig. They're tight, punchy, quick, and everything the stereotype of 15's tells you they shouldn't be. The tweeter is really good, the best one Ampeg's built, that's for sure, and the cabs are really quite light. I can't imagine a band so loud that the 2x15's wouldn't do the trick...or the 4x10's. They're both great. Knowing Latin music's penchant for big, deep bass, again, I'd go with the 15's.

It's a great amp system, one of the best they've EVER built. My other rig is almost $7,000.00 worth of Berg IP/Summit Audio pre/comp, etc., so it takes quite a lot to impress me. ANd this rig does.

About $1200.00 for 2x15's and a great sounding 500 watt amp...amazing!

Cheers,
Cameron

As soon as it passed my inspection I decided to order the PF-500 head. I'm not sure what to expect from the head as whilst Ampeg have managed to put out the cabinets at a great price point I'm not sure if the heads are really going to cut it as first choice amps. The Micro VR is great for the money but more money can buy better tone.

Let me say though that I have a vague plan to sit the Jule Monique on top and maybe use the power amp in on the PF-500 so I'll have the tube goodness going in. The PF-115 looks FANTASTIC just with a Jule Monique sat on top for a modern authentic B15 vibe. I may even look for a tiny class D power amp that I can possibly even hang round the back or something, out of the way.

I was skeptical about using the PF500 as my primary amp as well - esp. since it's all solid state and I only paid $249 for it. But since I've started gigging it on my Ampeg Simmons cab, I haven't taken my 3-Pros or V4Bh out of the garage. That PF head has balls, and the tone is great. I think the Jule Monique would look really cool on top of the 500 with the PF cab, but honestly - you'll proabbly be surprised how well the PF sounds on it's own. I've got a '63 B15 and the PF sounds really good through the B15 cab as well - even without using the B15 as a preamp.

I know I've shared this before, but anyone worried about a PF-500 being enough for loud or outdoor gigs needs to check this out: I'm playing a Pf-500 through a 410hlf classic. Volume at about 11:00

ROCK BOX at Kellerstock 2011 - YouTube

That sounds great and you guys do a great job on that song! My band does several ZZ Top songs. After hearing your cover I would really like to add it to our set list.

I just picked up an Ampeg PF-500 and run it into an old Carvin V210 400w 2x10 and it sounds great! It cuts right through a loud rock band with our drummer and his shotgun barrel double kicks! lol Anyhow, it has plenty of power and mated with a good speaker cab will be ample for most situations. Anyhow, I am in love with my new head and it seems so is everyone else who has heard it around here!

So I did a little short AB with the PF115he and my Vintage Blue double baffle B-15 cab loaded with a Delta 15a, and my official position is that it totally hangs. I didn't have a lot of time to pinpoint the actual differences, but nothing really jumped out at me. Won't say the sound is 100% identical, but it's darn close, and I wouldn't necessarily say one is better than the other. Really looking forward to rocking it on my gig tonight!

A couple other short things I've found out that are pretty cool...

---Pull the back wheels out, and it tilts back and sits solidly and won't roll.

---The compression driver tweeter actually enhances the sound instead of dominating it like most tweeters. Don't know if I'll use it, but it certainly sounds better than most.

---The PF350 and the Micro VR sound the same to me in a direct AB, which is a good thing. Naturally the PF350 has more headroom and a volume bump, but despite the Micro VR being a class AB power amp and the PF350 being class D, I hear no difference.
