Ampeg PF500/PF350

The 500 made rehearsal today and the sound improved 200%. Of course it helps the acoustic player/singer is also now using a PA instead of a tube amp for guitar and a 15 watt practice amp for vocals. I would like to think the 500 helped too. I love the fx blend because I can get just a touch of overdrive when needed and still have the full bass sound that I want.

P.S. I found out that it fits in the laptop slot of my backpack and all of my cables, pedal, and whatnot else also fits in there.

Quick question for ya'll. I am looking at the PF500, but I would like to get the 210 AV micro cab instead of the PF 210, as it will fit in my trunk easier. Will this be too much amp for this cab? I play in a Blues band that plays at a moderate volume, never too loud, and usually no FOH for the bass.

Thanks,

Johno!

I bet it would sound pretty good, but I would get two of the cabs myself, especially if you don't ever have PA support.

Jimmy will probably chime in in a moment but he has stated that he feels the 200 watt limit is pretty accurate so keep that in mind.

It's really amusing how often this comes up. Seems like at least three times a day. You can run a 5000 watt amplifier into a 100 watt cabinet all day long. How in the heck is this possible?? Won't the 100 watt cabinet explode?? Actually, no. Most amplifier manufacturers planned for just this contingency by putting knobs on the front of the amplifier. There must be a bunch of knuckleheads at Guitar Center or somewhere telling newbs that the head wattage must match the heat rating of the speaker cabinets. Or maybe this kind of folklore is handed down by guitar players?:eyebrow:

Okay I'm thinking for the future here (if I ever get to try a Pf500, that is!)

What should I pair it with? I'm thinking the Pf210 and 115, or else an SVT410HE.

Any opinions? By the time I buy the cab I'll be back in Ireland so I'll have to buy them unseen and unheard.

Both are viable, but I would suggest if you use Portaflex cabs to either use 2 - 210s or 2 - 115s. Mixing cabs of different sonic characteristics could lead to some unwanted tone canceling. But these two cabs can't be that different.

I have 2 of the 115s on order myself. Now its the waiting game...

Thanks.

I don't know what it is about 15 inch cabs. My only experience of a good amp is my Ashdown ABM combo that has a single 15 inch speaker no horn or tweeter, and I've never been happy with the sounds I get from it. So that's why I'm hesitant to only buy a 15 inch cab now!

Actually.....

I own a B100R. I used to own a Micro VR/SVT210AV mini-stack. I played through a PF350, a PF210HE, a Micro VR, and a SVT210AV today at Guitar Center in various configurations (swapping heads and cabinets to compare).

They all sounded great. I think my favorite combination was the Micro VR through the PF210HE.

Here are my very brief impressions:

PF350 - Sounded really good. With the gain cranked it actually had a pretty nice mild overdrive that sounded smooth. Overall it has a similar tone to the Micro VR, but the VR tends toward a little more aggressive sound while the PF350 is a little smoother and rounder.

PF210HE - Sounded really good. Had a bigger rounder sound than the SVT210AV with a little high end rolled off (I didn't mess with the tweeter much, and had it turned off most of the time, since it's not really my thing). I tried several times swapping cabs without touching the settings at all on the heads. The PF cab always sounded bigger and smoother, and the SVT210 always cut a little more and had more high end (unless I turned the tweeter on in the PF, in which case that one obviously had more high end).

Hope that helps someone. Overall, I really think they're all great.

Well my saga continues...
I originally purchased the Ampeg PF350 Amp head and the SVT210AV. Sounded great in GC but in a small to medium church it sounded thin.

So I went back to GC and ordered the GKMB115. It sounds ok but... it isn't an Ampeg! I just overall like the Ampeg sound.

So... I am going back to GC and getting the Ampeg PF500 and the B115E, I think.

I really wanted something I could carry myself and I won't be able to carry this. I am 5'2 and female... Not a weakling but too many years in the Tae Kwon-Do ring has beaten me up.
Preference is: lightweight - but can't seem to find that.

I would have preferred a 1x12 but Ampeg doesn't make that anymore.

What are your opinions/take on this?

I just want to get what I like and move on. Some people love buying and trying new things, I don't. But I had to have a new Amp and this is where I am at.
