Ampeg Rocket Bass Combos

You spot out should " RB115 sending around 135W to the internal 1x15" ".

Between 6:40 and 7:20, Dino says that the RB210 is, "roughly 300-400watts as a standalone combo" until you add an extension cabinet for the full 500watts, and he also says that the RB115 is, "roughly 150watts" until you add an extension speaker cabinet for the full 200watts.

I mentioned roughly 135W for the RB115 and 335W for the RB210 without extensions attached as those numbers are approximately 2/3rds of the full listed wattage for these amps, which makes sense given what Dino said in the video.

Thank sharing, this is first time i watch this video. Suggest email Ampeg customer service team to find out the output number.

As a Ampeg experience demonstrator, Dino can't use the word "Roughly" to explain their products as it would confuse buyers.

So this is where salesperson speak meets electronic formulas.....

the RB-210 has 2 x 16 ohm speakers in parallel. this equals 8 ohms impedance.

a variation on ohms law is P(ower) = V(oltage) squared / Resistance ~ P= VxV /R

if you half the resistance ( technically it is impedance ) the resultant power doubles - this is what happens when you plug in an 8 ohm extension speaker - 8 ohms in parallel with 8 ohms = 4 ohms

This is why the RB-210 owners manual states : -

500 Watts RMS @ 4ohms 5% THD+N (with external speaker)
250 Watts RMS @ 8ohms 2% THD+N
it'll be the same dealio with all the other rocket bass amps because this is how it all works.

Ok cool thanks. So then does this also mean that the Fender Rumble 200 and Rumble 500 combos without an extension cabinet attached aren't actually delivering what they list @8Ω in the manual? Or are they made differently from the Rocket Bass amps somehow?

guitar player here, who is having a serious bass love affair right now! (haven't touched my guitars in weeks haha)

anyway i am currently auditioning home amps (i don't see myself playing bass at gigs anytime soon). before this odyssey began we had 2 smaller bass amps in the house: Peavey Max 112 and Rumble 15 v3. the Peavey was a little too dull & mumbly sounding and also too loud & heavy (physical size was fine). Rumble 15 is just too small & too boxy sounding, with none of that growly character that I love (which i think is a P into an old SVT). so I got a new RB-112 from GC to try, and holy-moly is that the sound I'm after. it just sounds right, regardless of eq settings. But it is just too big in size, plus i really can't justify the new cost for this (likely) short term obsession.

so next up is a BA-110v2 that i got used for cheap. from what i have read the RB line sounds very similar to the BAv2 line, so i had high hopes. but it arrived yesterday and i'm not feeling it. this BA just doesn't have that character that gives me a half-chub, which the RB-112 does effortlessly. i mean it's not bad, and definitely better than the Peavey and Fender i mentioned above, but i'm disappointed. specifically, the tone that excites me from the RB-112 is that growl I mentioned above. i'm new to bass tone criticism so bear with me, but if i had to guess I'd say the tone i like is a bit scooped in the low mids, with more presence in the upper mids? the BA-110v2 is just too round and imo kinda dull, and the eq doesn't hit the spots I need (a Low-Mid control a la the Fender Rumble might have saved the day here).

so that leads me to this question: is it simply the RB line that I like more, or just the 12" speaker? in other words, would the RB-110 or the BA-112v2 get me closer to the sound of the RB-112? Assuming it's the former I just ordered a new RB-110 from GC to do the head-to-head experimenting. (boy do i have a lot of amps to return in the next couple weeks lol. our living room looks like a low-budg showroom.)

thoughts?

(thanks!)

Anecdotally, it seems to me like the RB-112 is the most popular in this thread. Seems to hit that sweet spot between volume and speaker size for a combo for most people (I have the 210 + PF115HE just because I wanted to squeeze all 500w out, but I wouldn't mind picking up a 112 for lugging to a friend's).

I think across the board the SGT on the RB series is highly praised over the SCR channel on the BA series, but there are SCR lovers out there. not sure how important built-in dirt is for you.

All that being said, it might be that you like 12" speakers. Price difference (and in my opinion, very usable kickback feature) might make you happier with the BA-112, weight difference might make you happier with the RB-112. You'll have to trust your ears.

I agree with you, the Rumble 200/150 combo@140w internal driver, still louder than Rb115. R200C able get close to Hartke KB15 too.

My first Rb115 not louder than Rb112 , except wider low end spread and lacking some upper MID bite.
Add a cab to the RB 115 then let me know which is louder (112, Rumble 200, etc). Believe me it makes quite a difference. In fact, I found the RB 115 once you hook up the Portaflex 115 cab to it as loud or louder than the RB 210 with the same cab.

I own both the RB 110 and 112 and I’ll confirm you are pursuing a solid plan. Your new RB 110 will
likely do the trick

Agreed, it is IMHO. Like the past couple of series, their twelve combos have the bottom end that pleases write less of the boominess found with larger speakers. They have decent power, are still light in weight, and for the money gives you a lot.

To the OP, I do believe the RB-112 is your best guy, as I own one myself, but have heard good things about the 110 as well. The article you read mentioning the V2 series as being similar to the Rocket Bass line was incorrect. The SGT tone is more usable than the V2’s Scrambler in that it doesn’t wipe out your low end.
I also own a V2 combo, the 108, and it’s fine in its own way, but I recommend to ya to stay with the RB combos for your newly-found bass interest. Good hunting!

thanks, all. that is very helpful indeed. i am happy to hear that it sounds to most of you guys like i'm heading in an effectively linear trajectory. :)

i think much will be revealed once the RB-110 arrives. i am expecting it will be the one. (but i also expected the BA-110 to be the one haha)

i wish i could just keep the RB-112 but it is not an option -- it's just-over-the-line too big for my living room, and to carry up & down stairs. but i am imagining how light the 110 will be . . . whoa. as it is, the 112 makes everyone gasp when i have them lift it. of course i say something like, "Feel how incredibly heavy my new amp is" or whatever. it enhances the surprise i think. but it is truly a marvel no matter your expectations.

btw i want to point out that my annoying insistence about this combo needing to be small is because i also have a massive & heavy 115 bass combo in our practice space. it's a Fender Rumble 150 (of the v2 line) that i got locally for $50! it's a monster and i kinda love it. plenty aggressive, that one. and really changes character nicely with the 4 band eq. anyway, that's why i don't feel lame having a rigid size limit on this home amp.

ps
my thrill playing through the Rumble 115 makes me wonder how much i'd LOVE to play through one of the Ampeg 115's or 210's. or possibly better yet: a head & cab version. (i think my wallet just twitched)

Cab size make this 12 in driver sound big and full like cab with 15 driver, meanwhile more upper mid voice and bite compare to RB115.

There are some one said the RB110 sound great like big bro 810 because 10 in driver. Does 110 cab has 810 fridge size ? China made Eminence sound able close to Legend BP102 ?
