Ampeg SGT-DI

I've had similar experiences, but haven't tried backing off on the tone of any of my basses... I'll have to give that a shot!

Are you using the cabsim at all? I personally think it sounds so much better with the cabsim off.
I haven't used the cabsim, except for occasional home experimentation. There might be a use for them live or in the studio but I haven't had a need because what I get has been great so far.

Yeah I actually use the SGT with the cabsim off.
I think cabsim is useful, but it can be heavy handed, especially on a bass that doesn’t have a wide open frequency response to begin with.
I do like the 12” cabsim (preloaded on the user side of the switch) much better than the 810 or others.

FWIW, I feel the cabsim is fine for recording directly from the SGT to my DAW, and yes, even then you have to be careful of too much bottom. Currently, I'm favoring the Shift Line Bass IP Pak, particularly the SUNN and MESA 215 cabs. For going into an amp, I think the sims are too much for the speaker, even with an HPF.

Agreed, of all the pre-loaded ones, that 2x12 in the user bank is the best one, but I've yet to find a situation where I felt like I NEEDED it over just having cabsim turned off.

I think a lot of people prematurely wrote off the SGT due to not liking the cabsim. Not sure why they didn't just turn it off...

You may be right. I love it with the 112 cabsim for headphones and DAW, leave it off in front of an amp. Also Found that you can make the sims more usable in an amp situation if you mess with the software a bit to tweak the filters.

This is me playing the bass track to Soundgarden’s Slaves & Bulldozers, SGT engaged at about 9:00. It’s nice and grimy: Slaves and Bulldozer 4-3-24

Sounds great!

I've been using the SGT-DI since they came out and I do like the SGT circuit now, especially with the level boosted but the grit low/medium. It gets wild with my bright Jazz bass in a way that I think sounds rich.

But most of the time I'm running it with the overdrive off and even using it clean I like the sounds.

Others are reporting otherwise but I like the cab sounds a lot and I'm using them all the time, especially the B15 / 1x15. I set the pedal that way and usually leave it, and live through DI it sounds good.

You can plug a tuner without needing a return cable. Downside to this is that you can’t mute your sound as if the tuner was first in the chain. If I get the SGT-DI I’ll put my tuner first, as normal.

And yeah, here in the UK there’s a few weeks wait time. The US have clearly been prioritised for this launch <_<

Yes you are correct. I’ve tried two tuners through the Thru. Both will not mute! Annoying!

My brother stopped by a music store going out of business and picked me up an SGT-DI on a big discount, as an early birthday gift.

I'm looking forward to playing around with it! I would love to have an amp-in-a-box with a great speaker sim for gigs where the house sound is amplifying bass.

Since having so much fun w/ the SGT-DI in the studio I really wanted to use it live. And with the positive feedback from TB Straight Ahead Power Amp owners I put this mini rig together. Looking forward to a couple test drives later this week.

The SAPA tucks perfectly under the SGT-DI & pedal board via the monitor stand.

Both fit w/ enough room for cables in a laptop case.

Anyone tried running one of these into the power section of, say, a Fender Rumble 800?
How does it work?
I'd love to have the option to amplify the preamp when needed (and have it sound somewhat accurate) but also run di.

I've run my SGT-DI into the power section of both my Ampeg pf800 & GK 1001RBII at home at low levels. I'm sure it would work fine on stage. In fact, I plan to use these setups when I have a large enough gig. I bet paring the SGT-DI pre & 1001RBII power could be epic.

Interesting couple of gigs using the SGT-DI for the first time live.

Thursday night:
-outdoor, sit down, quiet restaurant gig
-lots of concrete & glass
-weird positioning of my amp near concrete columns
I tried the settings I love in the studio but the SGT circuit, even on minimum setting sounded muddy w/ out much definition. The clean signal was punchy and sounded great. But using the SGT overdrive was the whole point of wanting to utilize the SGT-DI in the first place.:banghead:

Friday night:
-indoor, sit-down, louder, restaurant gig
-on an elevated stage in a room w/ much better acoustics
What a difference a venue makes. The SGT circuit sounded amazing!:hyper: It was the perfect overdriven tone I was able to get in the studio. Plenty of punch to cut thru the mix & a bit of snarl that was tamed or accentuated depending on my attack. This is what I was hoping for. The SGT-DI allows lots of tonal options for any stage environment.

I had ran the SCR-DI for quite a while until I got a HeadRush pedalboard. Recently I got a Jackson Spectra Pro VI and wanted something that could fit in the bass case but still have versatile and incredible tone. Searched around for a bit and chose the SGT-DI. This thing is light years beyond the SCR-DI. Truly an Ampeg rig in a box with a few very nice bonuses. Absolutely love it.
