Ampeg SGT-DI

I really like the SGT response when I use it on a clean signal but a bit rough when used with a dirty input.
My usual settings are :
Grit: 8:00 to 9:00
Level : ~2:00
Switch : B15

I guess I need to find a way to lower the dirty input level when SGT is engaged...

That's what the level knob on the Grit circuit is for. :smug:

Although I've used the Grit knob from 8:00 to 10:00 for some crazy OD on a specific tune in the studio I find it's best when set at zero w/ level at unity gain for most use. Then I toggle between the SVT & B15, depending on the song. The clean signal is always a nice alternative for certain songs as well.

Sure, but the Level knob is controlling the SGT circuit output level, not the input level.
I will try with Grit all the way down to see if I can get better results.

I use an SGT-DI in the studio & live. It's very quiet and delivers that Ampeg thunder. The sweepable mids allow you to dial in the right amount of punch and the SGT has a natural OD tone w/ no loss on the low end. I switch between the B15 & SVT, depending on the song and/ or room.

Question for you. I notice a volume drop when I go to B15 from SVT.

You mentioned that you switch between the two depending on the song, so I was curious how you dealt with the volume drop. Do you just do a quick increase of the Grit volume to compensate when switching?

I typically set it to SVT live but will toggle depending on a song if I'm in the studio. Yep I use the level knob on the Grit circuit to match the intended output.

Ah ok, that makes much more sense in a studio environment. Thanks for the Clarification!

When playing live, what do you usually keep the grit set to? I've been experimenting with different grit levels, but I won't be able to test it out live till later this week.

I set it at zero and adjust the level equal to the clean signal without the SGT engaged. To my ears it adds just the right amount of light OD vintage warmth. SVT sounds a touch tighter, the B15 a touch fatter.

Sgt is top 5 overdrive pedals ever made, I think it's the best ever, but I havnt played them all ,,that sgt circuit alone or combined with the preamp destroys all the other ampeg style pedals ,, and I would hope so seeing how ampeg made it..lol..I'm just in love,,I think the sv pre is a close 2nd for drive that is , i didn't get these pedals for clean tones though

Also if you put a line drive or a simple boost b4 the sgt it goes in steroid mode and is just unreal!
