I've heard a regular issue 410hlf and the Heritage side by side, and while the regular one is much less boomy and has much better mid content than it used to when SLM was making them, the Heritage is even better and totally worth the extra hundy.

It was decided about a year and a half ago that Hodgy's expertise was needed in tech support, so he doesn't build the Heritage stuff anymore that I know of.
It's still a very nice cab and I'm sure whoever builds the Heritage stuff now is a fine upstanding citizen just like Hodgy.
Have you tried putting your mid frequency selector switch on number 5 and cranking the mid range boost knob all the way? I am all for you purchasing a Heritage SVT410HLF (as that is what I use most of the time lately) - but I would be surprised if boosting the upper mids on that amp did not make that setup sound more lively - or not muddy.
I have been playing right about 3 oclock position on the mid with the switch on 5, good call it is the only way to clear up some of the muddy tone. But playing there I feel I'm losing a lot of the lower Ampeg tone so I still am going to get a new cab. Its like I'm forcing the cab to sound good at the expense of the rest of the amps tonal qualities. I hope to get to Bass Central soon and try a few cabs.
I'm quite surprised to see someone describe GK NEO 212 as "muddy". I've played Ampeg 810E (great cab) before my GK NEO 412 (which, well, should be tonally very close to 212) and if anything, GK has more clarity. Granted, it's ported and it doesn't have the same low mid reaction as Ampeg 810, but being careful with too much bass should yield some extremely clear tones. I've played my GK NEO with 3 different heads, and if anything, I needed a more vintage sounding one since I'm not a fan of modern tone. Ampeg worked fine with my GK RB head, but it was too modern, too crispy with GK NEO. Honestly, I think it should work great with Ampeg SVT-7.
Oh, before my 412, I played an SVT 410-HLF (granted, it was the "dark era" one) and it was by far the worst and muddiest cab I've every played.
Do you back off on your bass knob or do you crank it? Too much bass might muddy things up in a bad room with a ported cab IME.
I have the bass knob around 9-10 o clock position. I think it boils down to what you said, its a more modern tone. I'm looking for more of a old school tone. Great cabinet but its not the tone I want.
Just curious how everyone uses their midrange control on the svt7pro. What frequency setting and how much do you boost or cut?
I tend to leave it at noon and set it at 800, but I'll also boost it a little if I'm having a hard time hearing myself.
I have been using what sounds like an extreme setting (on paper) - but I think it sounds great - very defined and punchy - but there are some atypical personal playing style factors and instruments that I employ.

Bass Knob - 11:00 ish
mid selector on 5
mid almost all the way up
treble knob at about 10:00
This eq'ing emulates the sounds I used to get using the graphic eq on my SVT-2 Pro way back when it was my only amp.
Mostly I have been using the 7-Pro with a Heritage SVT410HLF with the horn barely on
Usually with a vintage or reissue Ampeg Scroll Bass - or a '51 P Bass
Flatwound strings
I play with fingernails on my right hand with a fairly light picking attack (even in punk settings - it works for me
).
We also use this rig when my girlfriend is playing bass in our band - I think it sounds great with her technique (more traditional) as well.

Please correct me if I am wrong - but won't the amp sound the same no matter which mid setting you are using (1-5) if the the midrange knob is set at noon?

I like the mid freq at position 4 and up around 3 o'clock, Ultra low on, bass at about 11 and treble around noon. But I'm still fairly new to this amp and still experimenting. I play it though a PF410HLF or a PF115HE but not at the same time so please don't jump all over me for mixing cabs

Yes, that's true but I think Jimmy meant he keeps it at 800 for when he boosts the mids to cut through.
I just realized you were specifically asking about midrange settings only.
I am juggling too many things right now :/
