Ampeg SVT 7 Pro Club

Ok, so we played last night at a club, and today we played an outdoor event at one of the local Harley dealerships. My plan was to start the show with my 4Pro, switch to the 7Pro for the 2nd set, and switch back to the 4Pro for the last set. I figured I'd get a good comparison of the two amps at gig volume. I set the knobs on the 7Pro to match the 4Pro and away we went....

The results:

Well, last night, I played the 1st set, and just marveled at how big, full, and clean the 4Pro sounds! It truly is one of the best amps I've ever played. But that's not what we're here for, right? Got the 7Pro hooked up and ready to go for the 2nd set. Wasn't sure what to expect, but I can tell you this, I used the 7Pro the rest of the night!! Again, big, full, and clean are pretty apt descriptions of the 7Pro. I can hear a slight difference in some of the mid content, but overall, the 7Pro is EXACTLY what I'd hoped it would be, enough tonal similarity to the 4Pro that I could use either and be happy!

Today's show was pretty much a copy of last night. I just need a second PN-410HLF. The 7Pro is a keeper!:thumbsup::D

I practiced with my band yesterday using my new TH500. Gotta say, it just didn't do it for me. I am really thinking of sending it back and giving the 7 Pro another chance. I LOVED the tone I got from it and I didn't even have to run my BDDI to get the sound I wanted. I had to use it with the TH500 but even then it just didn't do it for me. I think my plan will be to send it back and buy a new 7 Pro from Guitar Center, that way I have convenient support right down the street.

I did notice that minute knob movements do drastically change the tone. I don't think I can get away from the fact that the reason I started playing bass was because of Tim Commerford and his tone is what made me love the bass guitar. While the 7 Pro doesn't replicate it exactly it does get me in the ballpark of something that pleases my ears. From my short time comparing the I don't think the TH500 fits the bill of what I am looking for. It did sound very good in the mix, I will give it that.

it's been a long time since I switched rigs. This has been with me for over 3 years.

I added the DBX 1066 about a year ago and after 2 weeks I pulled the plugs and went back to the simple 1 knob compressor on the 7PRO. I'm too lazy to pull it from the rack.

Yeah, my guitar player just gets this sad look on his face and shakes his head. I can't wait to see what he does when I show up with two PN-410s!!! He may actually go sit in a corner and cry a bit...:crying::D


Edit: Sorry about what seemed to be a dumb question. When I saw your rig earlier, I was on my phone and I couldn't really tell what drivers were in your cabs. Now that I'm on my tablet, I can see they're 15s. I can tell by looking that your rig sounds awesome!

@eyoyo I play through an Ampeg PF410HLF. I did a lot of knob turning but I just couldn't get anything I really liked. I plan on replacing the cab soon and I thought about keeping the TH500 a little while longer but I am seeking "agressivity" and the 7 Pro did that for me.

I would be interested in your feedback on the PN cabs.. I have been thinking about ordering a pair.. but not being able to hear them at all, I have to go on what others say.. a good description would be awesome!

Oh and by the way.. I have gotten rid of the Seven Pro in favor of the GK Fusion 800

I think that the GK is way more flexible with tone than the Ampeg.. plus I feel that the GK is truer in it's power rating.. I was playing a Spector 5 string through the GK into a Mesa PH610 and it was massive! I had the gain at 9 o'clock and the master at 7:30.. and it was too loud for the store at that setting! I mean .. it was massive, the Ampeg was not close.. I played it first so that I would have a reference.. I also tried the MB500 and the Aggie TH 500.. the GK won out..

They are here Invalid Link Removed you have to register (easy and fast) to view and download. Download the schematics for clear copies, you will have to accept the non redistribute agreement before download. That agreement is the reason I won't upload them here, I need to protect that access.

Here's my original critique of the cabs from 3 years ago....

Currently, I'm still very satisfied with the cabs. From my original mini-review of the cabs the only issue that's a non-issue was a vibration developed after 2 years of use. I grabbed a screwdriver and pulled the grill then gave a very slight turn to each screw on the basket, replaced the grill and I'm good to go. Rattle and vibrations are gone.

After 3+ years durability has been satisfactory, it can be relatively easy to get a mark or scratch these cabs but it's also easy to mask with a black marker.

I picked up a wireless last year and have been able venture out during sound checks to give a listen. From 50-75 feet the cabs sit nice. My preference is a "bass" heavy tone but the cabs are pretty neutral and will take what you give them. Not by choice but I've also have had the need to crank up the volume a few times because of loud guitar players and an oversized stage and I've never heard a "fart" out of these cabs.


I also found a pic from when I first purchased these cabs. I still have the IIPRO as well.

I think GK always seems louder than their rating. At least IME.

I had a MB800 when they were first released and it was just stupid loud. Sounded pretty good to me. Just not great and didn't care for the feel of the pots.

The Th500 is very well built but I just couldn't get a tone I loved out of it and it felt a little underpowered.
