Ampeg SVT 7 Pro Club

Hey guys, new to talkbass.
Had a question for you guys because y'all seem to know a lot about these amps.

I'm running an ampeg svt 7 through a single 18 carvin 8ohms.

I'm having trouble dialing in any good tones out of this thing. What settings would y'all recommend?

I play country music and I like that vintage round tone and just seem to always dial in farty non pleasing tones with this thing. I pretty much just sat this thing in the corner for a year after getting all pissed at it. I recently bought the Eden wtdi and tried it through the front end of the amp and got bad tones and it seemed to clip the amp a ton.

I have a bbe maximizer in it a behringer compressor and used to run thoughts with no luck at fixing my tone. I think it might be the cab...

I'm playing a fender special deluxe pbass with Duncan quarter pounders through the thing

Don't worry about speaker size. That's what got you into trouble in the first place :D Speaker size tells you nothing about a cab. Go listen to some cabs and buy one that sounds good to you regardless of what size speakers are in it or how it's built.

What Jimmy said....don't worry about speaker size because a 15" will not necessarily give more lows than a 10". Decide what you budget is, volume requirements, and what your portability requirements are (big/small cab). Be prepared for 100 suggestions.

I'd also suggest when you decide on and purchase a new cab keep the maximizer and compressor out of the equation. The 7PRO a decent, easy to use onboard compressor.

I would try a cab that didnt have an 18 in it! Or at least balance it with a horn or some 10s

No offense, but those two cabs couldn't have less in common besides the fact that they are both 4x10s. Your experience with a budget GK offering has no correlation to a suggestion of an Ampeg 4x10 that is commonly thought to be an industry standard, pro quality cab. Ampeg themselves recommend the SVT410HLF as a good match to the 7Pro. I doubt they would do that if the 7Pro was going to consistently blow the speakers in that cab.

All 4x10s are not the same. There are good ones and there are bad ones. There are some geared to get a vintage tone and some that produce a more hifi, modern tone. The Ampeg cab might not be for you, it definitely isn't the right cab for everyone. But I wouldn't dismiss simply because you had a bad experience with budget 410 from a different manufacturer.

Only issue I have with that cab is it is 4 ohms. You have no expandability although it would be rare to need a 2nd 410.

Now if they made an 8 ohm version of that cab. drool

Hmm...unless you go with the PN-410HLF which is 8 ohms and ported. I'm guessing you can EQ and get in the ballpark if you dig the tone of the SVT410HLF.

Yeah I wasn't saying that gk made me feel bad towards any 4x10 I was simply saying that's the only 4x10 I used on it before te speaker problems. That gk cab was total garbage and jimmy said it best about them sucking. I need to find a 4x10hlf and play through it and see if it's what like. I've also searched the NEO ampeg cabs and was wondering how well they sounded and handled the amp? The price is hard to look at but I do understand they are probably worth it. I've also looked at avatar cabs and their neo line. I'm just trying to get the best advice before I spend money.

The 7 Pro has a very good compression feature, so the first thing I'd do is get rid of the Behringer compressor. I use the same maximizer, and I think it makes a big difference. I'm not familiar with the other box you mentioned, but all I can say is I get fantastic tone through a huge range, but I'm running it through an Ampeg SVT 410 HLF classic cab. So, maybe you should look into a different cab

I can comment on the PN-115HLF's....I've had a pair for 3 1/2 years and they are very nice cabs IMO. Good build quality, a good horn (I usually dial mine off though), kinda neutral sounding for Ampeg but has the Ampeg vibe. Not boomy at all but you can dial big lows into it and it handles it with ease (within reason of course ;)). Using the 7PRO which I've had for almost 4 years, the PN's handle all the 7PRO can dish out. My usual settings for a "louder" gig or rehearsal is....gain at 2 or 3 o'clock, bass 2 o'clock, mids 1 o'clock, mid selector at 2 or 3, treble at 11 o'clock, and master at 12 o'clock. Onboard compressor is usually dialed a little bit at 9 o'clock. I play both 4 and 5 strings and I've never had a fart out of these cabs (but I'm usually careful and listen and back off if necessary).

I can't comment on the Avatars as I've never demo'd them.

Mine is an 8-ohm cab, so the wattage lines up nicely. I might be a bit more conservative on the master volume if it's a 4-ohm cab, though. Either way, I pay more attention to listening/watching how the drivers are responding as I turn things up than I do to the claimed wattage figures (for amp and for cab). Use your ears and be reasonable in what you ask of your gear, and it tends to all work out just fine.
