Ampeg SVT 7 Pro - Cutting out ???

Uhm... for now I've been able to fight my GAS for the Svt7, I think I'll wait a few months and if I ever find a working band I'll take one. Never liked ampeg cabs but I think the SVT2 (non Pro) is the best sounding head ever made, and if the 7 goes close in 7kg and 700 bucks... :bassist:

I found this thread by googling "Ampeg SVT 7 Cutting Out". I've got a Rev C00 that I bought earlier this year. Never had any problems with it until this weekend, where it powered down (rebooted) about 15-20 times over 3 sets.

I play every weekend, doing 3 - 45 minute sets, and I run the amp at 12 o'clock on the gain and master. At this level, the compressor kicks in a little, but the clip light never comes on. Over the course of the night, the amp would randomly power down (green light goes off, then it goes through the power-up stages). Very annoying. Between sets I checked the IEC cable, connections were still good, power at the venue was strong (118-120V), nobody else on stage was having issues.

I'm running this with a 610HLE, I love the tone to death but this issue is concerning. Is this rebooting issue the same as what people have been experiencing in this thread?

Assuming Rev C00 is the original (and what I had) you MUST return it or call ampeg and inquire about a free update. These issues are unforgivable if they charge you to fix them.

The problem you and everyone is describing happened to me at moderate volume several times and high volume in one occasion.

For me 1 not so serious gig and a couple rehearsals was enough to kill my love affair with the tone. I am still too scared to waste resources on a latter revision.

Burn me once shame on ampeg burn me twice shame on me.:scowl:

I hate to pile on this excellent sounding amp, but here's my experience.

I got a brand new rev C00, and it cut out (shut down) about 5 times over a single set on the first gig. Each time I was down for about 30 seconds since I had no sound until I turned it off, waited a few seconds and and then turned it back on. I was NOT overly loud. I like a clean sound and this was an Americana group, not a metal band. EQ was a mid boost bass/treble flat, and master was at noon or below.

I've played the same club before and after with my Genz amps and they were fine with the house power. They were also set much louder than the Ampeg. In my opinion, this is not a class D thing, this is a genuine problem with at least some units of this model of amp.

I liked the sound quite a bit, but it wasn't luuuurve or nuthin. After a lot of soul-searching, I decided I couldn't deal with the psychological uncertainty, so rather than exchange or repair, I returned it and instead went with a used ShuttleMax 9.2. I can get very close to the Ampeg sound with my 9.2, and I haven't had any problems with that amp or my Streamliner.

This was my first Ampeg amp, and while I'm not going to assume anything about the company or the model as a whole based on this one experience, I personally am very gun-shy about getting another 7 Pro. My anecdotal experience obviously doesn't apply to everyone, as lots of people have had trouble-free 7 Pros. But an anecdote feels pretty real when it happens to you.

I realize your frustration is relatively recent, but that's the kind of thing I wanted to avoid... I'm just relaying my experience without editorializing. Others have had different experiences and prospective buyers can decide for themselves.

Sorry, I apologize for using your word. My experience actually wasn't recent which concerns me more, people are still getting burned!

The way I see it, the several members here on TB with 7Pro issues took a bullet that no other TB member or google searcher should ever have to take.

So speaking for OhulahanBass:

"If you must try the 7Pro don't get burned. Please please please, for your own sake check the rev # and buy from a retailer with a good return policy. Don't feel my heart break"

Just wanted to upgrade my SVT7Pro situation. I had a strange malfunction where there was no sound going to the speakers at all but I could still use the DI for PA or playing with headphones. The store repaired it, I'm sure it was something simple like a blown capacitor or a bad solder point.

Ever since it was fixed almost a year ago, it kept working with no issues at all. I'm still afraid it might die on me though, it's a Rev C00..

I'm glad your issue seems to be rectified. I wonder if Ampeg has resolved the problem with the 7PRO as it doesn't seem to be in the forefront as it was a year or two ago? My 7PRO has been going great for 2+ years (C00) and the "what if" does enter my mind from time to time.

Ever since Ampeg sent most of their stuff overseas, I wouldn't touch the brand.

My U.S.-made GK 1001RB-II has been trouble-free for the last six years, and stacks up to ANY amp out there (tube emulation is fantastic). I HIGHLY recommend one.

Your loss. The stuff they make now is as good as anything they made under SLM, and in the case of the cabs, even better, since LOUD uses plywood and much better sounding speakers as opposed to the OSB and mud-monster speakers they used at SLM.

Also, I can name off 4 or 5 brands off the top of my head that have had models that have had as much or more trouble than the 7 Pro and PF500, including GK. BTW, Gk was in China for years and years, yet nobody seemed to mind, did they? Ampeg does it and they're the most evil company on earth. Whatever.

Agreed! I play in a 5 piece thrash, speed metal band with two very loud guitards one with a twin rectifier snd the other a Hughes and kettner bith full stacks. I PUSH my 7pro revision C hard real Hard every Saturday night that thing is a monster been doing it know over two years without a hitch!
