Amps you hate

Hartke, Crate, Trace Ellliot solid states, and of course , Behringer. But nothing is as worthless and putrid as a ROGUE!
Played my cousins combo Rogue amp once, and it sounded awful. I have had growling stomachs with more tone.

In no particular order, the amps & cabs I have hated a lot:

~Hartke Kickback Series~
Good sounds can not come out of one. It sounds like a
really good amp with all of the tone and expression removed.
Reminds me of my mother's broiled chicken.

~Tom Scholtz Rockman~
Smart engineering went into making this remarkable
headphone amp. As a result, it makes all bases sound
alike, and unpleasant.

~Raezer's Edge Cabs~
There are a number of jazz upright players who love these
cabs and probably a few electric cats too. They, at the very
least, sound much better than a shoebox with a JBL in it, but not by much.

~Gorilla GB-30 Bass Combo~
Got mine on eBay for $30 dollars. Seems like the amp section
isn't the major culprit, but rather the worst little teensy speaker
ever put in an amp. Needlessly oversized headphone amp is all it is.

To be honest, the Ampeg 8x10 kind of disappointed me. I'd always read all these AMAZING reviews about it, but to be honest, I just couldn't get the low end I desired out of it. My SWR Megoliath seems much better to me. However, I do believe the SWR amps are EXTREMELY underpowered and sterile sounding.

Ace Tone!!
Traded my first amp (blackface Fender Bassman with 2x12 cab) for a solid state Ace Tone. Eventually traded it in on something bigger.
When anyone asks/kids me about getting older, all I have to do is remember some of the foolish things I did in my youth. This is right near the top!!

I'm not much into my Hartke Kickback amp anymore, I see how much it lacked mid control so it was pretty much a hate for me. Other than that I don't like peavey at all or behringer. Other than that I pretty much like everything but it depends on what bass I'm playing

1)- SWR amps- most of us can fart louder than a Bass 350
2)- Eden heads- the tone is cool, but why do they rate at twice the power that they actually put out? And is a 550 really any diffeent than a 400/ really any different than a 300?
3)- Sovtek tubes. Give them ALL to your guitard, they are the shi++iest tube on the planet for bass.
4)- Markbass. Sorry guys, but I'm not buying the hype. Small and light, sure, but how does it sound live w/ a band? And yes, I HAVE tried it with a band that included a screaming guitard- the sound disappeared and hid.
5)- Viet nAmpeg. Five years ago, the company was trumpeting out how it was the 'Great American Amp Company'. then LOUD (lout) Music group buys the name from SLM, and closed the factories in Missouri and Arkansas, and moved production to Viet- fuggin'-Nam. Real class. I hope the brand bombs- funny how the cheap labor costs hasn't been reflected in the price list. Screw you LOUD, I hope the ghosts of 1,000 Viet Nam veterans haunt your dreams and make you wake up screaming every night. Everett Hull would be sickened, and you should be ashamed.

Man, I tried to read the whole thread, but it's just pointless...

I love my Ampeg SVT-VR, but having played the SVT-CL and many others, I know and understand why so many people dislike them.

The same about every brand that has been named... I mean... why?

And, why we should name a thread like this one????

I hate new Ampeg's and new Trace Elliots, unfortunately I was yet to be alive when they were in their prime.

I've grown to really dislike GK stuff. I'll be honest, though, that's probably all because of the cheap combo I have, and my frustrations with it because it would start to distort really badly when turned up beyond five or six. And now it's just dead.

And Mesa-Boogie heads, but that's only cause I can't work the damn things. So many knobs.

Well apart from getting a headache from reading this whole thread. My other headache was from my previously owned Accoustic B320 head w/ 2-15 cab. (I don't remember anyone mentioning this brand). I thought the head was underpowered for cab and a little muddy. Not to mention I blew one of the 15's the first week I owned it. They did made a powered 210 cab for it, but I didn't have a chance to really try it out.

I really hate my MarkBass LMII...it's only 6 lbs., about the size of a cigar box, and gets stoopid loud with tone for days.

WHY DIDN'T THEY INVENT THIS SOONER???

I can honestly say that I like most every amp I've played through. I didn't love all of them, and I still haven't found "the one that they will bury me with", but I haven't hated any amp yet. I even "cough" liked "cough" the Behringer head I played through last year. I heven't tried the Mark Bass heads yet and some of the other newer heads that have came out, but I've tried Crate, Peavey, Behrenger, SWR, Trace Elliott, Eden (of course), Ampeg, Fender, Gallien Krueger, Mesa Boogie, and a few others. Haven't tried Rogue yet either.

Cabs are a different story. Behrenger cabs are horrendous, amd some Ampeg cabs aren't worthy of the Ampeg logo that's attached to it.

Sure, there's gonna be amps some prefer, and some you just don't like. That's just a matter of taste. But you haven't even approached a really hate-worthy amp in this thread.

Surely I'm not the only old fart who can remember the old padded, sparkly, "tuck and roll" Kustom amps. Yeesh!

I once played a Trace SM amp / SWR Goliath 4x10 combi.
Probably the worst sound I've ever had and heard.

And I hate Thunderfunk amps........because they're are not available in Europe...

I recently grabbed a new 6X10HLF and WHOA!!!!! I love it to death!! I realize that the 8X10 is the "BIG BOY" and all that, but I will take the 6X10 any day of the week and twice on Sunday!!!

You know, it's funny, but when I asked the GC store manager why the 6X10 was only 50 bucks less than the 8X10 he offered me this proposition: Take it home with you - play it for a week - if you don't agree that it is one of the better cabs you have EVER played on (that's a tall order - 34 years of cabs and experience) bring it back and I'll swap you even for the 8X10..........I never took the cab back. As a matter of fact, I called to thank him for the sound advice....

Now, there are those who will scoff....that's cool. Can't find any problem with that. But for ME, the 6X10HLF is MY cab....
