Ancient Technology Enthusiasts Club!

The phone at my Grandparents' house. It was hardwired into the phone line- No RJ-11 jack or anything.

1956 Western Electric Model 500 Telephone by Dave The Golden Boy, on Flickr
We still have one. Ours is red and has the later RJ jack and a plastic dial instead of a metal dial. My parents' phone had a metal dial and and enormous four prong plug on the end of the cord. The difference is that theirs worked right up to the end. Ours would work but we don't have a land line any more.

When I was growing up, we had a wall phone in the kitchen. I had to stretch the cord out as far as possible to get to another room and shut the door to talk to my girlfriend.

Ancient Aliens started as an interesting show, but it has become a meme of itself.

Graham Hancock’s latest Netflix special was decent, it dove into several lesser known sites that are mind boggling to understand how or why they were built and several haven’t even been properly excavated.

China has no interest in exploring the large number of pyramids they have. I wonder if that’s because there is evidence someone besides Asian’s lived there and therefore is of no interest to China’s government.

Recently a small granite vase/vessel was precision scanned and the thing was found to be made within still impossible tolerances, just a few thousandths off of true to center for any measurement. They were unable to scan the inside the same way, it’s just too small. For something that small made from a material like aluminum or vinyl, something homogenous and easy to work with, is only just recently possible with 5 axis milling machines, which are exclusively utilized for making aerospace parts, and those are still not as accurate, and this tiny thing is made from granite, a material composed of several different materials, all with different hardness and not stuff that’s easy to cut even if you have diamond cutters. It’s insane to think something like that could be made to that spec by hand with stone hammers and copper chisels. Clearly there was a manufacturing process, one that we may never understand.

When people talk of Aliens they mention advanced civilizations. Like futuristic. It’s possibly our future. If aliens were able to physically get to earth, their culture would have to be ancient. If we ever expect to physically get to other planets outside our own solar system we will have to keep our political and social act together long enough to become ancient. Then it’s just science. AI will get us there if we don’t kill ourselves. Then the fun begins. I believe there is a 10,000 year old P bass on some planet somewhere. I wonder how much it weighs and whether they have a fascination with tort.

:nailbiting: I don't know if humans are going to make it.

The most pernicious thing about human beings seems to be how we so easily can be persueded to hate and kill each other. Other species fight, even kill each other occasionally, but humans are the only species (other than maybe ants) on this planet that takes such enjoyment in slaughtering hundreds or thousands or millions or tens of millions of its own.
Currently much of the world seems to be dividing itself up into autocracies and democracies. Right now we may be playing through the opening overture of a conflagration that will exceed WWII in total deaths. The only off-ramp that I'm able to see at this moment is a Stauffenberg-style solution, which is pretty doubtful.

Until and unless we can uptransform ourselves into something less susceptible to lies and propaganda, less hateful, less murderous, less poisonous, we don't deserve to go to the stars.
----
What if there really are aliens, and they're here observing us? Seems like reports of unidentified flying things greatly picked up during and after WWII. If the aliens were here to eat us, we'd know that by now. Any civilization that can travel through interstellar space is technically advanced enough to destroy us. And so far, they haven't. What if we're being observed at this very interesting, pivotal part of our history? Do humans destroy each other or do we evolve?

{ Where's that 'bummer warning' emoji? } :nailbiting:

there may be an ancient colony of romans in liqian Lost in Time: The Vanished Roman Legion of Ancient China
I'm sorry, but if this is intended as replying to my post as well, since you quote it, go ahead and consider it directed to you too.

Me, when I read about ancient ruins in a country whose inhabitants have been living there for a long, long time including the period when those building were erected, my working hypothesis is *they* fricking built them.
What in Confoundation leads one to espouse basically any random, fringe hypothesis except the most danged obvious?

Let's take a step back.
The pyramids of Egypt were not built by the Egyptians, and they lie about it now.
The pyramids of China were not built by the Chinese, and they lie about it now.
I guess the Mayans didn't build theirs either? Angkor Wat, now?
Hasn't anyone ever built their own stuff anywhere?
Sheesh. I'm afraid to ask about Great Zimbabwe at this point...

it certainly wasn't my intention to tick anyone off. i was only trying to participate in the conversation, by showing that there is evidence to suggest that maybe not everyone from an ancient country, is from there. i quoted 2 posts because those posts were related to what i was posting. the link i shared doesn't say anything definitively, i tried to draw attention to that aspect.
what we do know for sure is, there are blocks in the great pyramids that we are unable to lift into the positions they are in, right now. there are tell tale signs in all of those monuments you mentioned that machine tools were used. to create any of that with bronze age technology (as we are taught it was) is impossible, to the point of being cliché in how obvious it is. regardless of who anyone thinks built that stuff, they are amazing. it's hard for me to accept that there isn't someone out there with information we don't have, that would explain at least some of the mystery

All right.

- Alleged by whom, pray tell?
- And you believe it, because... ?

I don’t normally do someone else’s research for them, but here’s the first step for free, only took 5 seconds to find it on YT. If you feel Graham Hancock is a shill or pseudoscientist/pseudoarcheologist and not simply a good investigative reporter following the evidence as it’s presented, then why are you in this thread at all?

Dude, this is a thread to discuss ancient tech and civilizations, it’s all speculation because there is no sure way to know with certainty what really happened long ago. Maybe many advanced civies have come and gone over millenia, maybe we have been here for only 6000yrs and the Bible is exactly right. Our modern take on the past is simply a best guess based on the information we were given. Maybe if we had ALL the information or were allowed to continued to search properly, we might have a better understanding, but what we have is what we have to work with.

Point is, don’t let anyone get down on you for expressing an idea you have, even if it isn’t backed up by modern academia or some super smart person like Neil Degrasse Tyson hasn’t said it first. Good science is all about ideas, and anyone can have those. The other day I had a problem I was having difficulty solving and my 14 year old daughter gave me a totally different perspective on it which made resolving it very easy. No one should be berated or made to feel shame for sharing an idea, even a bad one.

I asked you who alleges those pyramids were built by people who "don’t have the same physical appearance as the current land owners." You said it, one would think you could say where you get that from.
(Besides, how would I go about "researching" that in the first place?)
Unless I haven't paid enough attention, there's nothing in the video about such racial claims. So I'll ask you again. And I'll also ask why, of all things, you believe them.
If you feel Graham Hancock is a shill or pseudoscientist/pseudoarcheologist
Whoa, Cornell. I don't feel anything about the guy. I'd never even heard of him until 15 minutes ago.
I've googled him now. There seems to be loads of folks who think that for me.
then why are you in this thread at all?
Nowhere does it say this thread is for "Graham Hancock enthusiasts", or "pseudoarchaeology enthusiasts".

All those who insist that ancient monumental works must have been created with extraterrestrial help or some unknown now lost technology completely out of keeping with the times, are grossly underestimating the power of two ancient technologies that absolutely WERE available to the ancients:

- Muscle power provided by an enormous supply of slave labor
- Lots and lots of time.
