Odd enough, but my 1997 L2500 is a 6-bolt with neck tilt, on a black crinkle neck plate.

I think '97 is when they started moving to 6 bolt basses. I have a 3-bolt SB-2 that is a '93 and a 6 bolt L2k that's an '06

Yes, late 1997 or 1998, with washers and no neckplate, when they changed serial numbers from the B initial to the CL initial.
On some models, namely ASAT Bass and SB-2, they kept the 3-bolt w/tilt up to 2004 or even after (I owned a 2004 semi-hollow ASAT bass that had it, my 1999 SB-2 has it too).

The model name is "L2500 Custom". Featuring: book-matched ash top on alder body, no top arm contour, clear body binding, 1-15/16th nut width, OMG caps, 4+1 headstock (my avatar).

I have also seen 6-bolt chrome-plated neckplates, not sure these had the tilt attachment.
EDIT - these came with the mid-1997 changes (CLxxxxx serial numbers, fivers with 3+2 headstock and 1-13/16th nut width, through-body stringing - @Chef used to have one of them 1998 G&L L2500 custom shop!). They don't have the tilt attachment and the tiny hole anymore. In 1998, G&L had replaced the neck plate with the current bolts/washers design and 1-3/4 nut width.

Yes they are, that is why I asked. I had already bought a set of Roto 77s, but after playing it last night, I am thinking I may leave them on. are the 40-100? they seem a bit lighter than the 45-105 I usually use.

They are the lighter version. Just fantastic strings on a fantastic bass.

No problem at all. I appreciate the info. I am a pretty die hard Fender guy and don't personally care much for active basses, but I like to learn.
when I got my first SB-2, I had never even heard of G&L. I was living in Helena, MT, and was in Great Falls on business. At the time I had an Ovation Magnum 1, but was longing for a P and went into a small mom & pop. I saw the SB-2, Sunburst, tort, maple, from across the room and thought it was a P. When I got up to it, I saw it had the J pup and the G&L logo.
My first thought was, "oh, a knockoff." But, I took it off the wall and played it and decided it was a damn good knockoff. The guy was asking $800. This was in about 1995. I could read his coded tags and determined he had had it hanging there for 5 years, so I offered $500 cash and he took it. Only later did I find out it was Leo's design. I felt pretty stupid, but lucky.
I had to sell it in 2002 after I moved back to Texas because we were very broke. Since then, I've seen and played other G&Ls of various models, but never had the urge to get them. I did always miss the SB-2 and hoped I could find another. Then I saw this on TB classifieds and it was too good to pass up.
I've spent the last two evening getting used to it. I love the feel of the 12" radius 1 1/2" nut neck. It goes to its first gig tomorrow night. I'll have my P Select as backup, but I'm guessing it wont get much, if any, play time. This is probably my new #1.

I'm the original orderer of that fine bass. I like the no face dots look and it does have side dots -- avoids any temptation to the bad habit of looking at the front of the fretboard and makes it harder on guitar players to follow what you are doing It's become one of my go-to options on a custom G&L and a bunch of the ones with no face dots in the Rocketmusic G&L archive are my orders (even if I only have one still around). I'm tempted every time one comes back up for sale -- there's another gold SB2 (pre-empress) with no face dots that I think was my Rocketmusic order that I keep typing but not sending a PM about buying back . . .

This bass looks even better in person and you wouldn't believe how light it is if you haven't tried an empress G&L. I was really pleased with how the clear red was rich and dark over the empress.

unfortunately, I doubt if I'll be able to record. It is a small venue and we won't be putting anything in the board.
