Erm... native Americans were also darker than the white Spaniards who arrived in the 16th century... Zimmerman does not need to have any African blood to be a bit dark skinned.

I know some people get mad when I mention it, I am a history professor. I know something about the history of the Caribbean basin. If Zimmerman's ancestors are from anywhere in the Caribbean region, including big parts of Mexico, he probably has some African ancestry. To name two famous examples, Eva Longoria was found to be about 3% African when tested, Eva Mendes was 30% African when tested, neither is as morphologically "black" looking as Zimmerman, not that looks correlate precisely to appearance.

Right... because cops NEVER chase down anyone that runs from them who is white, Asian, or Native American...

Look - if you run from a cop (marked or unmarked) it's considered suspicious. I don't care what color you are.

So, do you ask 'hey are you a cop?' first, and then if the person answers 'no', THEN you run? Fear is a base instinct which manifests in a fight or flight response.

Anyway, WHAT is considered suspicious - the fact that you're running and you don't know if it's a cop chasing you, or that you're a minority and don't know if it's a cop chasing you? If I were watching a scene and a big man was chasing a scared kid, and the man was armed - my brain wouldn't go 'oh, it's ok, it's an unmarked cop'. I would call the police and say an armed man is chasing a kid. End of story.

What if he said goons?

There is a possibility that the initial police work was so shoddy, that a state prosecution may collapse. The police did not even sample the blood on Zimmerman's clothes! If the state case collapses, a hate crime charge will be the only chance to put Zimmerman in court. Goons might let Zimmerman walk.

I dunno man, I listened to the 911 tape recordings that people have provided, and I honestly cannot tell whether or not he said c**ns or punks, and I don't know how a jury can honestly say that he did say it or not. Even in the CNN video the host said that he couldn't, and wouldn't say in court whether he heard the slur or not.

Edit: I finally had a chance to listen through the different recordings of Zimmerman's phone call to 911, and with the exception of the "they always get away with it" comment, which is ambiguous, and the potential slur, I really don't know how anyone can say for sure whether or not this was a hate crime.

I do not hear a p or k I hear the word coons.

The CNN host says that it does sound like he said coons but then says that he wasn't sure. That's just his way of teetering while making it possible for him to not have to testify in court.

Might have been "goons" but who the hell says "goons" anymore? The more I listen to it, the less I hear anything that sounds like "punks". It's either "goons" or the other word, I'd bet on the latter given the other things that this guy had said.

I hear now that Florida Governor Scott has appointed a commission to study the case. This has gotten ridiculous, this case needed police work, not a goverment commission that will probably take a year to write a report that leads to nothing. In Florida, shootings are pretty doggone common. This should have been handled long ago. The fact that no one official with the ability have Zimmerman arrested has done so is a shame and an embarrasment to fair minded people in Florida.

The initial police work was so bad that I think it is fair to ask if there was a conspiracy to suppress evidence. Zimmerman was was not drug tested although Martin was. His bloody shirt was not taken for evidence. There was no ballistics work done on his gun (good luck finding it now:rollno:.) No background check was done on Zimmerman although one was done on Martin. Apparently some witnesses were ignored, and at least one witness was told by the officer to change her statement to fit the scenario that officer felt should fit. Finally, the police did not check the cell phone records of Martin.

I think it is fair to say that there was no investigation at all.
The total indifference to the killing of Trayvon Martin is actually more upsetting to me than his killing. Individual racism or paranoia is terrible, but realistically, no one can ever control every biased or possibly demented person. The fact that the local police were so biased that they only sought information that would justify the shooting instead of trying to honestly assess the situation is something that no one deserves, at least no one with human decency.

If it is possible, I think the investigating officer should be indicted for some charge related to appears to me to be a conspiracy to suppress evidence and deny justice, and the administration of the Sanford PD needs to be fired.
