Anthony Bourdain died

I am very conflicted about this. I've been watching the guy on TV since No Reservations on the Travel Channel. You would think that a guy that spent so much time finding the good in things, empathizing, and putting himself in other people's shoes would have a strong sense of himself. When a guy like Cornell or Bennington do themselves in, you can see the "tortured artist" in it. Hunter S Thompson was always a loose canon; impulsive and maniacal. Bourdain seemed like he had is stuff together. Why would someone that took so much joy out of squeezing the hedonistic juice out of life just cash in his chips?
Seems like such a waste.

That's why depression is such a motherflipper. It's so misunderstood it's become incredibly dangerous....

We do. The problem is society shames us, not to mention doesn't take us seriously.

... because this has always been the mindset. Show of hands - how many of you when growing up were told to "harden/man/suck it up" when you felt down? As you get older depression gets stronger (Depression As We Get Older) so you're told to "suck it up" as you age along with your anxiety, sadness, and depression. Seeking help is difficult because of this mindset that's been hammered into us. The CDC has finally started to ramp up their outreach for suicide and highlighting the difficulties and dangers of depression, but the cost to get here was way too high.

A lot of truth. I'm thankful for the treatment I get, It's really all I have.

In the wake of Kate Spade and now Anthony, heard someone say "everyone has a cross or burden to bear that we [the public and/ or family & friends] might or might not be aware of, be kind."

So true, and a warning for those today, having their own burdens.

If you have one LISTEN, You don't have to carry it alone. Find someone, anyone, priest, pastor, Rabbi, friend, coworker, hospital services, your family doctor, to share the load. DO IT NOW!!

This has been posted in my kitchen at work for over a year now. I wanted all my staff to understand what it feels like. Looks like my sous chef graffitied it today.

I’ve been watching his stuff for years. I was shocked to see the news. It’s sad. Apparent suicide in his hotel room during filming of his show in France.

This is very sad. We watched him here in Australia. I loved that he wasn’t a snob and would try the local food without hesitation even if it was simple and rough. I also loved that he was keen to learn about the local people and their culture.
I have been down the dark road of depression and it returns from time to time but luckily now I see it coming and have had help learning how to deal with it. There is a myth of masculinity that we must expose because it has fooled us all, men and women alike.

When I saw the news that Anthony Bourdain had died, I said to myself, "Who is Anthony Bourdain?" Then I saw his picture and recognized him as one of those "celebrity chefs" who are all over the place right now.

But seeing, hearing, and reading the tributes to the man has made me consider that he might be much more than another B rated celebrity. It's obvious that his death has hit a lot of people much harder than other celebrity deaths. Apparently Mr. Bourdain is regarded as very honest and genuine figure from a world known for image over substance and that his work has affected ordinary folks in profound ways. What he said about bass playing in that video clip opened my eyes.

I intend to read some of his books and watch a bunch of his past shows.

In the meantime, peace to his family and friends in their time of grief. Suicide is nearly always caused by mental anguish that becomes unbearable. It certainly isn't something that one chooses for selfish reasons and it's never the "easy way out".

RIP.

I'd highly recommend checking out some of his work. Even if you aren't that interested in the culinary world, the books are well written and compelling. And the TV episodes are a great window into walks of life that many of us are unfamiliar with.

It's funny that "celebrity chef" is what he was known as, though. He apparently hated being called that, since he hadn't worked in a restaurant in many years and didn't do the cooking show thing.
