Any DIY pedal builders on TB? Strut your stuff!

I finished up a PedalPCB Leprechaun (EQD Rainbow Machine) last night. This thing is wacky. I really don't know how to classify it, but my buddy wanted it so that's what he got.

I am pretty happy with this build. Learned a lot with the previous one and this one went a bit faster and cleaner. The color of the enclosure is closer to the last photo. The light in my house made it look more aqua.

I also got myself a new proper soldering station (Weller WP1010) which made things a lot easier. Mainly I was able to forego flux and get the solder wet much more quickly. What a difference from the 25w Weller I was using before.

Crappy irons are just the worst. I'm glad you got a nice one. It looks like a newer version of my Weller WES51. I'll probably cry if my WD2M ever dies.

Yeah, I love green and gold. The LEDs are yellow, too. It all works pretty well together.

I bought some gold foot switches from LMS but instinctively grabbed the blue boxes when assembling everything. I had it all wired up by the time I remembered. Oh, well. I'll put the gold ones to use somewhere down the line. I do think that was a missed opportunity, though, so I am a bit bummed about it since it would have looked pretty rad. But since it's going to a friend for free I can live with it.

The new soldering stating is amazing. The pen is smaller and easier to hold, the cable is more flexible, it heats up incredibly fast (had to give the other one a solid 5 minuts at least to get to temp). I kept the old one because it's decent and will work in a pinch, but I just think I didn't know what I was missing with a more powerful iron. Best $100 I've spent in a while.

Do it , you wont regret it. I'm so glad this post was started. It nive to converse with others that have the same interests. Thats on nice big role of diodes. I have a healthy stock of goodies but nothing like that.
I have finally missdrilled my first box. I have probably made 60+ pedals so not bad. It may be the first but certainly wont be the last.
Thinking my next project might be a modded blue box. I have way to many drive pedals.

@AudioTaper Thanks for the scope shots. I've been lent one, but I've yet to figure out how to use it. Just need time to sit down with it, I guess, but time's running out and I'll have to give it back before I can craic on with it.

The mojo trick is to try and squeeze the Ezekiel all inside a 1590B enclosure!

i could do it, but i wanted top jacks so i designed & etched my own PCB and used a 125B and added a relayed true bypass:

The Analog Devices ADG2188 eval board arrived yesterday. It is working great. I have five pedals hooked up and I can put them in and out and in any order. (It can handle 8 loops but I ran out of cables.)

I'm kinda wondering if Boss uses this chip in their ES8.
 
Got my Solder-Fume Fix this past Thursday night — finally got over to my buddy's amp-atelier to work on The Little Princeton's final stages...

Prior to Heater-Wires installation

Twisted and soldered the heater wires, one of the last remaining tasks; amp-guru helped with some other sundry wiring tasks and then it was powered up...

No explosions, sparks nor magic smoke escaping... good...

Added the rectifier tube, some noise, but passing voltage...

12AX7 insertion was a bit stiff so may have to ditch the tube socket for a new one;

6V6, OK...

and plugged in a Strat...

THE GOOD
Sound was clear, very little noise when not playing

THE BAD
Wired the Vol-pot backwards, easy fix; Tone-knob does something, but only a little, and tone is perhaps a little harsh/brittle

THE UGLY
Dadgumrectumfire-tubum only works with a little bit of pressure on it, so need to replace the tube-shaped object with a real 5Y3 tube. To get the tube to heat up and pass signal, gentle pressure on its crown was required (used a small block of wood, dem tubes get hot right quick!).


So, going to replace the tube, coupler caps (big orange C4/C6) and possibly the tone-cap; swap vol 3 & 1; need to wire up an "on" LED in addition to the other aforementioned fixes; need to do a complete voltage check and hopefully sort out the tone — once sorted, amp will be sent on its way to its new home.


What, pray-tell, has this amp nonsense got to do with a thread about pedal-building? Well, it's tacitly related — they both involve singeing one's nostril-hairs with acrid fumes of rosincore 64-36 aaaaannnnnnd...

...made me realise I've got some going-away gifts to build.


One of the builds is for a good friend who's an ABCer — amp bass cable — guy. I've chosen Francis Deck's HPF#3 project to wiggle its way in between my friend's P-Bass and his Genz-Benz. Might sneak this build in with the amp builds/repairs (still have to replace a transformer in mhy own vintage amp). My ABC-buddy's HPF-Pre III will go in a non-pedal-like enclosure ...


So, still not building "pedals", but nonetheless making messes with molten metal/tin...
 
I'm controlling the ADG2188 from a Raspberry Pi Zero. Next is logic for putting devices in a prescribed order.
Then a GUI. Then saving and recalling presets.

I could link it to my NuX NBP-5 controller code to have both the switching and NBP-5 change presets at the same time.
 
In the spirit of Devi's 2009 schematics "spread the love", here is the stripboard layout and build plan I put together for a Hyperion & Silver Crank combo pedal. Silver Crank is the right side of the board. Dark Boost is the left side.

I built this up tonight on the breadboard (minus the switch between the two halves. Tons of gain, sustain for days, but I got a lot of background noise. I'll build it up on one of the perfboards and put it in an enclosure with a better power supply soon. That should help with the noise, but I want to play around with the caps a little more first. I replaced all the 0.1uF with 0.22uF and it gave it a little more low end. I'll switch it back a few times to compare. Maybe put a blend function on it....
 
Very nice and tidy. How does it sound. I haven’t ventured into the transformer world yet. What do I look for when ordering capacitors to get the short stubby ones like you have in there. Are they a certain voltage that comes that size?
This pedal is based on the AION Isotope. I used the schematics and create my own PCB.
I compared this pedal with the Transboost (talkbass-project). It sounds a little bit different with more "overdriven sounds". But it has a very useful 2-band Eq.
I searched for a long time until I found the right (short) electrolytic capacitors.

I'm interested in your impressions from swapping caps. The evolutionary vestige double cap between modules would be negated by two .22uf caps. I was considering making this mod for my hexafuzz switching arrangement.

I was thinking about adding in switches to take them in and out quickly to A/B the caps.

Are you suggesting only swapping two caps? Which two? First and last?
