Any mountain bikers??

epitaph04...any frame cracks??

Nope! Ive been spared by the MTB gods...my dads canaan wasnt so lucky though. About a year or so it developed a nice crack right where the top tube and seat tube meet...right beneath the seat post quick release.

That UCI video clip is amazing. The commentary is really entertaining too! Damn what a run. That was just inspiring and breathtaking.

Epitaph04...dang that sucks. I was just reading some reviews because you posted your bike and it seems like a large percentage of people riding those bikes developed cracks. That is good to hear that yours is fine.

Oh yeah that's what the dude at Performance told us...luckily he was able to swap it out for that year's canaan model for free...all he did was switch out the brakes and rear derailleur for some shimano XTs...but now he's thinking of trying out some 29ers and damn it I might be tempted to try some out too!

Be specific- pics would be nice. :)
I rode my fully-rigid steel(w/Ti-legged fork)SS today

You must be a masochist. :D

I've fully embraced the squish. I like the idea of a hardtail but for our terrain my back says no way. My knees definitely say no way to single speed.

Though I must admit to lusting after Chromag's steel hardtails, but then again, I'm a Chromag junkie. :D

Here's my old Specialized M4. I cracked the the carbon front shock and replaced it with a cheap rock shox. Sigh. Still a great bike though. I wrecked the rear rim on the downhill of this trail. Don't really want to throw anymore money at this bike. Putting together some junk to sell to pick up a new one. Then I'll rebuild this one as a commuter.

I am, but I go back & forth- I have an 09 Enduro SL, an 05 Gemini 900, an 91 Retrotec(setup as a high-geared SS road burner)& an 83 Pro Cruiser(that's the Chromo/Ti SS MTB). Punished myself for 2 1/2 hrs on the last one this morning. I can't stop smiling when I descend on it. :D

Our terrain doesn't really lend itself to SS or rigid bikes. Everything is really technical and there are a lot of short but steep ups and downs. Or maybe I'm just a wimp. :D

The downhill makes the uphill worth it x10.

Absolutely. There's a reason my Tracer is built like that. :D

Take a trip out to Mammoth sometime. Rent a DH bike and do some lift-assisted riding. It's ridiculously fun and addictive. You've been warned. :D

I also want to rent some FS 29ers on the mountain before I actually go buy one.

Good idea to try one before.

700 wheel for mountain bikes are really not for every body , I really didn't like the feeling. It can be a dream come true if you are on rolling terrain , fire roads and stuff alike but on technical trail , the 26 inch is still King !

IMHO

The trails I ride 99.99% of the time are about 3/4 rideable- plus I have the bike geared fairly low: 32x17- I had a different bike w/a 36x20 that worked a bit better, but IMO it was mostly due to the geometry. All that said, I am pretty wimpy but also stubborn. I tend to refuse to believe I have to ride like I'm 47 just because I am. Sometimes it works... ;)

What kind of stuff do you ride? What did you not like about the 29er?

I ride a Cannondale SS , Leftyfied , Rohloff'ed.
I like technical , muddy , rocky. (North east Canada)
I love to climb , I love the satisfaction of climbing a wall without putting the foot down. ( even after trying 6 times! )

About the 700 , I liked the "rolling" feeling , once started on medium stuff , it's really shinning but I really disliked the extra weight on the wheels.
Feels slow and heavy on technical stuff compared to a 26" wheel. Feels slower when climbing too.
