Any mountain bikers??

Dang. Wish I could see the ground around here. I went out for a short spin on my new bike on Saturday. The trail was packed by people hiking on it, so it was all footprints and holes. Not good. You'd stay on top as long as you were on the trail, but go off the side and you're done. I put my foot down and sunk in mi-thigh deep snow.

Oh well, it's going to be a while for us here. We need the water, though, so I won't complain too much.

Well it's ski season and you guys have real mountains... That or a weekend trip to Moab. :D

It's warmed up a lot in the last couple of weeks around here and some of the snow has melted. I got out of work in time to go for a quick ride last night. Ended up doing some hill repeats since that was really all I could do with the snow that is still on the mountain. The climb I used is short, but really steep and loose. The bike handled it really well and I was impressed by the traction I was getting from the 29" tires and how they rolled over the rocks. I'm impressed.

Love those Spikers !!
When trails are very hard packed , I prefer to take my skinny as well.

Those Fatbike wheels are soooooooo heavier , super mega workout!

They're ridiculous on ice. I was out doing wheelies on a frozen pond last week. :D

I rode a friend's carbon 907 with a carbon wheelset a while ago on a dirt trail and was hugely surprised at how light it felt compared to the other fatties I've ridden. It was awesome. I want one but I think I'd need to sell a child to do it.

@Mark Reccord ... makes me glad I'm in Florida. :D We just had a 360 minute race this last weekend ... nice 68/70* weather ... I didn't race but volunteered to be a safety marshall. Lots of fun ... especially the pizza, t-shirt and beers afterwards.

I built my Fatty from scratch , around a Rohloff I have , so I kinda went for cheaper parts , wheels included.
Lighter wheels will be my first upgrade.
I have a good bike budget , but not that good :)

A sub 25 pound Fatty can get pretty expensive...

Ah, snow and ice ain't so bad. Where do you typically ride? Alifia?

My local trail is Graham Swamp ... pretty darn naturally technical for Florida ... kinda reminds me of North Carolina without all the roots ... and sand instread of red clay.

Mala Compra is another local-ish trail ... it's pretty XC until hit the optional "Cloud 9" technical section which is more enduro (if there really is a thing) ... with its natural and built stuff.

Haven't hit Santos yet ... but it's on the list ... not a lot of saddle time nowadays.

Took my son for a mountain bike ride this weekend. It was his first time, and he loved it. He impressed me, too. Killed it on the switchbacks and the climbs, and wasn't afraid of going downhill. He wants to go again as soon as possible. I wish I could take him everyday.

Trails look great! Have you guys been out lately?

This was a lot easier when it had hard packed snow on it for some reason:

We've been out a couple of times now. He has done better every time. He's not afraid of the downhills and the second time, he looked and felt much more comfortable about it. He carried a lot more speed (without being out of control) and he said he felt more comfortable and confident.

It's awesome. Really a proud papa moment for me.

Those trails look nice and fun. If I lived there, I'd ditch the hardtail for a good all mountain type trail bike, that's for sure.

How old is your boy? Mine just turned 7 and he's pretty good on his bike as well. He's small and still riding a 16" frame but I'm going to upgrade him to a 20" in the fall or next spring. I've built some ramps and a few dirt jumps in a vacant lot up the street and he loves that. I've had him on some the easier groomed gravel trails here but sadly there's nothing between that and the gnarly stuff like I posted above. People can and do ride those trails on hardtails but it's a pretty rough ride. I think they're cracked myself. Maybe when I was younger but my old carcass appreciates the squish and really, the increase in traction you get from the suspension trumps any reductions in pedaling efficiency. Traction is key on these trails especially when they're wet, which is most of the time. :D

He's 11 and is small for his age, but that doesn't bother him. He makes up for it with his big personality. He's on a 24" wheeled bike right now. The 26" wheels are still a bit too big. It works out for him though. He can whip that little bike around tight corners really well. I think it would be a bit harder on a bigger bike for him.

If your boy likes the dirt jumps at 7, that's awesome. Keep him going and he'll ripping the big boy stuff by the time he's 11.

^^^^ Likewise. My boy got an Opus Stan for his b-day in May and so I just had to go out and get one myself. Picked up a Trek Farley 5 at my LBS and what a blast. It's like riding a Tonka toy. Can't wait to go out and terrorize the cross country skiers this winter.

I don't suggest Xcountry ski Trails , Not Classic Trails anyway , they'll hate you for destroing their "grooves" , maybe "skating Xcountry" Trails .....
Around here , it's the snowshoing Trails that are shared with Fatbikes.
Snowmobiles Trails are fun , but risky

Just finished a weekend of 4X4 trails, I could climb stuff that would have been impossible with 2,4 tires.
These loose rocks climb .....

I Must say: fun but a lot more work.
