Any tips for Self Taught Bassists?

Try Alternating your right hand '' picking fingers" by playing measures of quarter, eighth, and sixteenth notes and alternating
which finger you start with, It is natural to start with the middle finger, Alternate starting with the middle then try starting with the index. Also practice the whole neck in 4 note chromatic movements.Do not waste time practicing your strong points, try to address what you feel are your weak points , Learn some chord theory so you understand what notes work with different chords, arpeggios are great for creating you own bass parts.

My oldest son has just taken up the guitar, and beyond technique the first piece of advice I gave him was to think of it as "you play music to practice music, and you practice music to play music". Learning scales is good for learning where the notes are on the fretboard, but making music is where the money's at. Nobody ever paid good money to listen to Eric Clapton run scales over and over all night long, they want to listen to him play music! I would say a good piece of advice is play along to whatever song comes up on the radio at any given moment.

Also, hang out here at TB. Ask questions, seek advice, begin a thread. there's lots to learn here, from people who have lots to offer. ;)
