anyone else not watch TV?

As with others here, I primarily use Netflix for content, I use a ROKU, so it's either NF or YouTube or Hulu.

I haven't had cable in about 3 years now. I rarely ever miss it.
There's just not enough new content I care to view, and cannot justify the price vs. the amt of content I do want to see. If there's something I truly *need* to see, I'll either watch it the day after broadcast through the station's website or through amazon for 2 bucks an episode.

I find myself mostly watching TED content or documentaries when I can commit solid viewing time, otherwise my viewing is mostly passive.

This will make me sound like a hipster. I'm not. I can't wear skinny jeans...

I don't own a TV. At least not one that is connected to anything. I haven't owned one since last July and I don't miss it particularly. Everything I want to watch is usually on catch-up services or Netflix and all I would watch would be Cricket - which isn't free-to-air in the UK anyway.

I don't feel like I'm missing out, although it does get odd reactions from friends when they visit.

As Jim Gaffigan would say, it's all McDonalds.....TV screen, monitor, mobile phone, internet, etc, it's all the same. But somehow the people who don't watch 'TV' feel like they are making better use of their life/time.

I think this thread is directed at the lack of quality TV programming, which I tend to agree with. I still put a lot of time in front of a screen... especially when you consider for 8 hours a day I have to be in front of one for work. I don't think I use my life better than someone who watches TV programming, I just know there's things I would rather do than watch most TV shows.
In regards to being in front of screen though... I rarely carry my smart phone with me when I'm out and about now, so if I'm not at home, I'm generally not in front of a screen. My wife is the same way as well. When at home though, I can be playing video games, working on sword/armor work, playing music, tooling around on my car or in my garage. Unless you're counting the LCD on the stereo :D
Again, I don't feel I'm a better person than someone who does sit in front of any screen more, but I feel that I'm a better person compared to a version of me who would. And I quite like my hobbies :).

I, too, am better than everyone else

In all seriousness, we got rid of cable, and Tustin has notoriously bad reception. There is a show that comes on the Korean channel kalled "Empress Ki" that my wife and I HAVE to watch every Mon and Tues night. Also 20 minutes or so of Arsenio hall/Jimmy Fallon before heading to bed

I'm missing a few things in this thread.

First, what's the difference between watching netflix, and watching TV? Netflix is all the same stuff you see on TV, but on demand.

Second, I don't understand why people seem so proud of not watching TV. Most people I know who boast that they don't own a TV spend most of their time texting, playing games, getting lost in social media, or doing something even more mindless, diconnecting, and/or destructive on a computer, than watching TV.

I don't consider it an accomplishment or anything to be proud of to not own, or watch a TV. I don't unerstang why some people think it bad to own or watch a TV. Enlighten me. I have a 55" 3D TV, and I love it. Gives me something great to do a few times a week while relaxing with my wife and 2 cats.

I own a couple of 1080p flat screens too, but I only watch a few hours of TV a week.

I think the point of the thread is, there's a lot of crap on network TV.

You watch a few times a week, and probably something a bit more edifying. I'm the same. It's no sin.

.

True, but to a point.

I consider texting to be at least talking to another person and exchanging thoughts, even if it is phone based.

Playing games requires thought, and many times includes a social aspect, like on XBOX Live when my friends and I play together.

I don't consider posting on TB to be mindless - here for example, we are having a mature discussion about an interesting topic.

I agree with the social media aspect though. One can only see so many pictures of meals, selfies and memes, seemingly in never ending supply.

In general, I think TV may do more harm than good. But to not watch it at all might be taking things to the extreme, at least that's the way I look at it. I do like to keep up with the news, not so much for entertainment, but because I think it's a good idea to keep informed. I don't like most TV shows, but I do like watching, for instance, the spy show "The Americans," and the sci-fi show "Continuum."

For me, personally, I don't watch T.V. because I find most of it banal and worthless. The shows I do watch ( from TV ) are more enjoyable, for me personally, and fit my schedule better, personally in a format like Netflix. I have yet to watch Breaking Bad. I have the entire series uninterrupted, at my fingertips now. I prefer to watch in this way. I'm not scoffing TV in the least, just answering the question that was posed.

Not really. You'd have to look for said programming amongst a wealth of other better things to watch. A great percentage of what you can watch on Netflix has never been shown on television. And I for one don't claim to not watch television. But what I choose to watch more often than not isn't crap.
