Anyone else out there -Not- a Huge Jaco Fan??

Sgtdemeo-
Took some guts to say that on this forum!
I always appreciate talent & genius, just don't always understand or 'get' it. As an example, I just don't 'get' most of the upright bass solos that I hear, even though I'm sure the players are very talented. And that's no reflection on the player.
I can also appreciate an artist's commercial success, even if I don't enjoy their music.

Jacos' genious lies in innovation. He was the first at many things bass. Innovators come seldom. Fleas are abundant.

You can't take his sound out of context and compare it to current sound options. The bass world was completely different then. He made it possible for all that have followed to be where they are today.

In regard to the style of music I think its hard for those without a love or at least appreciation for jazz to get into it. Jaco was definately a leading jazz figure. Not a rock player. So I understand the resistance to style.

But please do not take his work and impact out of context.
It's like comparing Niel Armstrong to the Wright brothers. The Wright borthers gave us flight. Niel Armstrong completed a very famous flight mission.

my 2 cents

I honestly believe that Jaco was one of the most theoretically brilliant players this world has ever seen. Sure, he may seem too busy to some people. But I honestly think that his pure knowledge of musical theory and ability to translate that onto his instrument put him ahead of the pack. One thing a lot of people tend to forget is is talent as a composer. The first song he ever wrote was "Domingo" - A stunningly intricate piece. He wrote the parts for every part of the Big Band he played with. Sure he may seem too busy, but that was his style. He pioneered in that sense. But people cannot overlook his theoretical brilliance.

so, in that same vein, if the measure of a musician is in the complexity of the music, then B.B. King is a crappy player compared to say, Jimi Hendrix? Or Bob Dylan is not as good a songwriter as John Lennon? come on, and get off of your soapboxes, people. seriously. Its not as complicated to appreciate music as you are making it out to be. And, just because I don't prefer the sound of a certain genre of music, does not mean that its just "beyond my understanding."

Don't ever listen to this nonsensical BS.

Complexity never ever automatically = good. Ever.

Dream Theater or Planet X would be the most popular bands in history if this was the formula.

These same ignoramuses couldn't probably write a rock riff to save their life... that anyone else would enjoy and/or buy, anyhow.

WOW!
I can't believe it.
So, let's get this right, if you 'ladies' (I can't call you men) don't get something it's no good right. If you can't understand it or hear it or 'tap you toes' to it, it must be awful right.......
You guy's should stop and look in the mirror. ...... Jaco was an American modern day Mozart. As a composer he was are brilliant. As a player completely original. His tone, his groove, his stamina (look it up). Jaco changed the bass world before you cam along, that's why you 'don't get it'.
Maybe it's because you never saw him on American Idol?
Victor will admit that 'Jaco opened the door' and everyone else followed.
I say, 'you ladies should wait outside'.

Your panties are all in a bunch over this.
The OP asked for people who aren't fans. So why are you in the thread?

As for myself, I never said he was "no good" - I said I don't care for his style or tone. The guy was 10,000X more accomplished than I, and I get that. So do most of the other people who responded. But as talented as he was, some of us don't care for his music. But you can't accept that because you like him.

You call out the ladies, but you're the only one hissy fittin' like a little girl.

I knew this thread would turn moronic eventually. ...but using 'ladies' as an insult is a pretty amazing thing to do in 2008.

not a fan because i dont like the style. it makes me yawn. which is sad because i could never play that fast. so he must have some amount of talent. and i have no desire to be like him in any way. o well, id rather be like me.

This is probably the biggest pile of **** I've read in a long time. Comparing Jaco to f-ing Mozart? Jaco was a joke. Maybe if you pulled you head out of your ass, you too could see the light.:spit:

Yes, i find Jaco to be a superb bassist, much better than I'll ever be, and much better than a lot of bassist that are more famous than him. And I like his sound. But, in my opinion, music is about sound. It's about making the nicest sounds out of your instruments. Very simple. I feel that a lot of musicians lose touch with what music is about, which is sound. Like a lot of jazz and shredding etc. It doesnt matter how diffucult it is to play scales at 300 bpm or how hard it is to improvise playing jazz, music is about sound. Well, atleast it is to me. :hiding:

While I agree that Jaco is not comporable to Mozart he was not a joke.

FWIW, Jaco and I came from the same home town. Home town kid makes good and so I have a special spot in my heart for him.

That admitted, it makes no difference to me if someone likes or dislikes his playing or music.

Great, create a straw man argument and use that as a launching pad for childish insults. Bravo.:scowl:

Saw Jaco at a small club back in the 80's - think he was playing with Mike Stern - don't remember. I was about 4 feet from the stage. He was a fantastic player and what I think is somewhat more significant is that I don't believe he was exceptionally gifted - although talented without a doubt. What I respect about him is that he was a serious student of Music and through his hard work and natural ability he left a Mark on Music and the Bass playing world.

No one has to dig him just because of his accomplishments musically. You don't have to like his music either. But I think any reasonably intelligent person that plays music can respect his talent and contribution to Music on the whole, and the Electric Bass as a Pioneer and Ambassador of the Low End. One of my favorite tracks is the Live version of The Chicken off of the Invitation Album - with the Soul Intro. Jaco is cutting the rug on that track - and killing it so effortlessly that is just makes me smile. One of those tracks that as soon as it ends - I hit repeat and start it over.

It's a free world - Jaco on a lot of levels was a Free Spirit - walked his own walk through both the good and the bad.
Something forever sad about losing him so early - especially when you think of how he died. Such a sad ending for someone that touched so many people. I remember reading somewhere that his heart continued to beat for 3 hours after they removed him from life support < that was a significant thing for me - he did not want to leave yet IMO. And in many ways, he is still here - this thread and all of the others that discuss his Merit is an example of his continued presence. Jam on Jaco! :bassist:

I really don't care if somebody doesn't care for Jaco, there are a lot of bassist threads I don't care for, I just don't bother to post my dislike for them. But comments like "Jaco was a joke" just shows a lack of understanding of the whole lineage of jazz history.

(pedro rubs eyes in disbelief then...THUD!! pedro faints.) I've kidded Jemmott more than once that I thought Jaco owed him royalties. Jemmott's all over Jaco's playing, IMO.

Once upon a time, I recorded this R&B-ish thing for some local guy...probably about 90 bpm.
I wanted a copy...so he used speed dub on a casette player (this was pre-cd burners, etc).
Anyway, what R&B-ish thing I had at 90 bpm sounded very Jaco-esque at 2x the speed.
I was like, damn...that's it! That's what I'm hearing in my head...and not enough gas in the tank to get there.
;)

Almost funny...especially as you seem to feel quite strongly about this simple matter of opinion (I myselve would be rather careful before likening Jaco to mozart, but that's just me) not even refraining from insulting your fellow TBers...( or at least Trying to...) some of whom may just be female.
As I said...Almost funny..just read out your post to yourself, listen to it, and ask yourself if a tone like this was really necessary

But of course, you are as entitled to your opinion as anyone else here.
