Anyone else out there "play" guitar?

View attachment 3308664 Or can you really play guitar? I bought a gretsch a while back with the intention of making the crossover. Well, I can play punk and some reggae. Hahahaha. It seems like a waste of a nice guitar to hold onto it but Its beautiful and I like to noodle a bit.

I play quite a bit when in the studio. Playing live, every entity I’ve played with are quite content to have me play bass. But I’ve been playing guitar since age 10, 4 years before I started playing bass.

Although I'm much better on bass than I'll ever be on guitar, I own more guitars than I do basses. I find it more satisfying to play guitar solo than bass. And I stopped playing with other musicians about 33 years ago.

Oh, I’d much rather play the bass live. But I’m still gigging quite a bit. On rare occasion, I’ll pick one up and touch it off just to let people know I’m not a one trick pony.

Maybe a little more positive than that...

When I lived in Vancouver the neighbourhood had unmarked intersections. People were supposed to know to slow down and look. I saw happy lucky excellent driving school go through at a steady 40-50 km/hr. Didn’t touch the brakes. Happy and lucky to survive! Also saw a tandem dump truck cruise through another time doing at least 50 and from time to time you’d hear the sound of breaking glass...

I tried for a long time, but I gave up because the guitar always won. At least the bass lets me win once in awhile.

I have a range of guitars to go with my two basses: an Alvarez 000-size steel string acoustic, a nylon string classical that gets nearly all my playing that isn’t bass, a dynamite Allparts Strat that was an experimental lab for a pickup builder who moved away from here and a Galanti that my mother bought for me in 1966 when I asked for a bass. It's nice to have something to offer when friends come over. I only occasionally play any but the classical.

I’ve dabbled with guitars. I had a Gibson Melody Maker for a while. I have a resonator now. Wouldn’t mind having another electric just to have one around but then I think if I buy an electric, then I have to buy an amp...pedals...etc.

Guitar was my first serious instrument, started at age 11 or 12. I write on guitar and bass both.

These days, this stock Squier Strat (HSS) covers the tonal bases for me quite nicely.
