Anyone gig with just a preamp pedal?

Hmmm...........my wireless has an XLR out on it. Maybe I'll try that.

Yes. I remember I had to go to another window to find the gain settings. I plugged something in and had no sound. I kinda figured it out. The band broke up before I really got a chance to delve into it and I sold it along with the rest of the PA System.

It's a small venue but they do not want bass amps, so one day I plugged directly to some unknown DI or maybe it was just a 1/4 to XLR converter and it worked just fine. That is why I like active basses. The miser was an old Mackie 16 channel. amd the bass was coming out of the venue's sound system

I haven’t used an amp live in 10 years or so. I’ve had zero issues with volume control. A small pedalboard holds my wireless, a Bergantino Super Pre, and octave, chorus, and envelope filter pedals in the fx loop. Works great, sounds great

@DWBass, there are some things you may want to look at if your signal is indeed clipping (assuming the sound person is correct and your signal IS clipping):
  • Change out the battery on your bass (if your bass is active). Batteries sometimes cause your signal to clip slightly when they are on the way out.
  • Check the gain on your wireless unit (if using wireless). Sometimes the gain on the transmitter is set too high, which can cause clipping on the receiver. They all have a gain setting on them.....super easy to check.
  • Additionally if you are using wireless be sure to do a frequency scan at the venue. Frequencies with interference can cause intermittent clipping on your signal.
Sorry for being Captain Obvious. Sometimes we overlook the simple stuff when troubleshooting signal chain issues.

It's not about preamp, it's about how one monitors his playing.

I own and use various monitoring "systems":
  1. IEM
  2. tactile transducers (Backbeat, Eich Bassboard, Eich drumchair)
  3. PJB Ear Box
  4. Helicon FX150 personal monitor
  5. various bass amps and cabs
Having available the above devices allows me to choose proper monitoring for any of my gigs.

For gig in casino like yours, I would probably use some of the devices under Nos. 1-4 (or their combination).

I've recently moved from a Headrush MX5 to an HX Stomp. No regrets thus far.

I still use an amp with one of my bands, so I plan to run a non-amp/cab sim signal to that and a sim signal to the mixer/IEM in an A/B path.

So far I've found that the Agua Sledge preamp (Tone Hammer) and the Regal Bass DI (Noble DI) sound the best through monitors/headphones. And although I'm usually not that crazy for the 8x10 SVT sounds, it's one of the better cab sims on the Stomp IMO.

I recall a time years ago when sound dude told me to turn down. I turned my amp to zero and he said I was still too loud. Turned out to be too much mud from the piano.

I believe the best way to guarantee you're not too loud is to go IEM / ampless. Then the only bass sound is FoH and it is 100% on them. I'm currently playing through an HX Stomp but have also used a few other pedals (Sansamp Para DI, Genzler 4OTF) with good results. My only amp is a medium size practice rig. The $$ I saved by not buying a big amp has gone to my custom IEMs.

I'm no longer going to use my amp rig. Will be going direct. I don't own IEM's (looking to buy a set) so they need to figure out how I'm going to hear myself. Probably from the drummer's monitor.

IEMs - I started with a $50 pair from Amazon (KZ10 something?). They work surprisingly well provided you can get a good seal in your ear. The seal was inconsistent for me, even after trying every foam/silicon tip on the market. I had to go custom IEM because my inner ear shape does not work with generic IEMs. But many of the folks I play with are using them and are happy.

I already have a nice set of ear buds I bought off Amazon. Just needed the IEM system. I just purchased a system by Phenyx Pro. I'll be receiving it today.
