Just saw the American Idol band's bass player using an SR5...saw it from behind and noticed the 4+1 tuners and the tear drop headstock. Pretty cool. (Wife forced me to watch it with her).

There is something kind of kick ass about a Stingray. I guess they aren't for everyone but I alway sfeel like I can slay dragons with growly punchy tone when I strap mine on! 
A Stingray is kind of like a 60's muscle car. Not as refined as boutique basses but they go fast chicks dig em!

Wow. I can't believe how many of these posts are anti-stingray. I bought a Stingray 4 String in January and absolutely love it.
The only downsides are the clackity-clack sounds that come perhaps because of my lack of mastery of the instrument, and the weight (its not that bad). It really amplifies my mistakes- because its so clean. It sounds awesome; there is a large range of tones that I can get with it, but am having a tough time finding a signature-versital tone that works from song to song.
For the most part, it was a 100% upgrade from my Ibanez SR3000e 4 string (which is still a great bass)

That's exactly how I feel about the tone. It's incredible. If they just made them lighter, with wider string spacing and fixed the low output G string I would still own one.

I LOVE it, Sure the neck got some getting used to (I've always played basses with really thin necks); But the tone is BEAUTIFUL - I've finally got the tone I've been striving for 3 years to get.

never got why they cost so much, I never found their necks nice (sterling of stingray (hvnt tryed a bongo yet) and I always thought they were alittle ugly (sorry). they do have a cool factor tho that is very different to the warwick cool factor. (i play warwick however)
I got a chance to play a MM Sterling 4 and did not like it. I just didnt like the feel of it, teh neck felt awkward and I did not love the clanky tone it has.
Although, it was at a GC so it could have been in dire need of a set-up.

Always loved the way they looked and fealt in my hands, with the exception of the'Ray5 which is just butt ugly IMO. Didn't much care for the clanky tone though. That being said, I'm a diehard Bongo lover now. I didn't care for their looks at first, then I played one. The birds sang, the clouds parted and I saw the light !! Praise the Bongo

I've owned an MM Stingray and a Sabre they were both very nicely built basses and I thought excellent players - great ergonomics. In both cases tho the volume output of the D and G strings was thin, and I just couldn't get them to sound good out my rig.
That said, it was only my experience, they are obviously a quality instrument.

I am the exact opposite of you. I love EBMM basses and wouldn't play a Warwick if it was free!
That is ok though. We play different music, like different ergonomics, different styles, and so on....
My back doesn't like my Stingrays though. I have 2 that are well over 10lbs (my SR5 is 11+!)
They are heavy as hell!

P.S. Has anyone else noticed that many Warwick owners dislike EBMM basses and vice versa? Interesting.

The more I play my 4HH, the more I love it. It sounds amazing, and I can get great textures out of it - super fat lows, real wet, mid-forward rock, all growly, high-end clacky (which I like for some things).
The second pickup really opens up the options.
I only notice lower volume on the G string, not the D. But then I adjusted the pickups, and run with my BBE OptoStomp, it is fine.

However... in my experience, I didn't like what they offer. I played one for a while a couple of days ago. It was a Stingray.
My problems with it? I couldn't coax many tones out of it that I liked. This was through an Ampeg SVT (SS) model head and a fridge. (I do with they had a tube one there...) I also tried it through a Hartke stack. It just sounded harsh most of the time, fingers or pick. It was just...off... for me with fingers and too clacky with a pick. Maybe a set of flats would do it for me. I'm a fan of the darker (low + low mid) MM tones.
What did I like? The neck wasn't bad at all. The feel wasn't all bad, and I like the look... but $1k+ for a a bass I like very little of the options of it's tone... doesn't make sense to me.
(Note: 3 days later I brought home a Jazz Bass. It's more of what I like.)
